It’s graduation season, and we’d like to celebrate our very own graduate: Program Director Sofie Diaman!

As if being a mom of two and leading The Storefront’s Program Team wasn’t enough, Sofie earned her master’s of social work from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. Join us in congratulating Sofie on her major accomplishment!

Can you spot all of the opportunities for healthy brain development in this photo?

1. Fine motor skills - The rings and the base are of varying sizes. This allows the child to practice gripping with their fingers in multiple ways.

2. Executive functioning skills - The stacking rings provide an open-ended exploration of cause and effect. Learning how their actions affect their environment enables children to develop the problem-solving skills necessary for everyday life.

3. Language development - The color, texture, and sound of the rings are all great things to describe and name. The more we use concrete language about the objects children interact with, the more they can connect those properties to spoken language.

4. Secure attachment - Positive back-and-forth interactions with a caregiver help children build trust and feel safe enough to explore, experience, and create.

Simple interactions pave the way for profound growth. What are your favorite simple ways to interact with your child?

Did you know that in its 60-year history, The Children’s Storefront has never charged for its programming?’ To say we’re proud to be a part of that legacy would be quite the understatement.

Thank you to our generous sponsors and guests, our board, and our staff, who made Born and Raised: A Benefit for the Children’s Storefront a tremendous success! It was a true joy to reflect on the past and pave the way for the future.

We’d like to add a special thank-you to Orrick, whose generosity and partnership have been a major factor in The Storefront’s decades of service to children in Harlem and the families who raise them.

Take a look back at an evening of connection and community.
