We are excited to announce that The Storefront’s very own Alex Haynes has been promoted to Marketing & Community Manager.

A Harlem native, Alex joined us as a Virtual Program Coach six years ago. For the last few years, he’s been the secret voice behind our digital presence, driving community connection through social media and other communication tools.

We’re excited to make this transition official. Congratulations, Alex!

At The Storefront, we focus on helping children develop what’s inside their heads, but that doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate what they put on top. We hope you have a weekend as fabulous as this friend’s headwear!

The Harlem Neighbor Swap, presented in collaboration with our friends at the NYPL , is a FREE opportunity to pass on and collect items with your community, and it’s coming up next month!

The main event is on October 24th, but item collection starts this Friday, September 18th. Here’s what you need to know:

- Drop-offs are welcome Thursdays-Saturdays, 12:30-2:30pm at our Playspace.
- We are accepting kids’ (5 and under) and postpartum items ONLY until Friday, October 9th.
- Older kids' and adult clothes or other items can be brought to the library on the day of the event.
-This year we are not accepting food/hygiene items (baby food/ diapers, wipes, rash creams, etc.

We’ll see you at the swap on October 24th from 10:30am-1pm at the Harlem Library!

Last week, The Storefront was closed to allow our team to engage in some reflection, planning, team-building, and a little trip to The Bronx Children’s Museum.

Our programs are back this week, and our fall schedule is in full swing!

We are pleased to introduce our new Director of Operations, Rebecca!

Rebecca brings a rare mix of hands-on problem-solving and leadership experience, previously working in operations across advertising, commercial real estate, and the non-profit sector. From Rebecca:

"Growing up in an immigrant family who relied on after-school programs, I understand how important third spaces are. At the same time, I have been lucky enough to witness my two-year-old nephew's development unfold since 2024. Watching him grow week after week in communication, mobility, and personality shows me how formative the first thousand days of his life really are. It is a big part of what draws me to The Storefront’s work and is where I want to continue the focus of my career.”

How do you turn a spool of thread into a learning opportunity? Just stand back and watch it unravel! (See what we did there?)

Taking turns and waiting is step 4 of Serve and Return; the evidence-based approach to back-and-forth interactions between caregivers and kids that our Play & Learn programming is based on.

Children get ideas during play, create plans, and engage their problem-solving skills to turn those plans into reality. When adults let children experiment without interruption, they clear a path for self-guided discovery. These discoveries help children learn how the world works, develop their creativity, and build their self-confidence.

These images were captured during a recent CAPE session. Community Adventure Play Experience (CAPE) was developed by experts at Sarah Lawrence College's Child Development Institute. The power of play is amplified by the magic of possibility that exists outside with open-ended, found materials. Our last CAPE session of the summer will run on August 25th at 10am. Come play, learn, and discover with us.

A new superstar has joined our team. Welcome our new Development Associate, Leomary!

Leomary, or Leo, brings a strong background in nonprofit fundraising operations. She comes to us with fantastic experience from her work at nonprofits, including Robin Hood and Part of the Solution. Outside of work, Leomary enjoys traveling, cooking, exploring fashion and beauty, and discovering new places. She is deeply inspired by our mission and is eager to help us expand opportunities for children and families.
