Where you live determines the air you breathe, the heat you feel, and the shade you have access to. 🌳

In 92% of U.S. cities, low-income neighborhoods have less tree cover — and are measurably hotter. In Tennessee, that gap shows up in Memphis, Nashville, and Chattanooga. It shows up in energy bills, asthma rates, and on the faces of kids playing outside in neighborhoods with no shade.

Trees aren't apolitical. Neither is the decision of where to plant them.

This is the work of the Soil Soldiers. 🌱

They show up on Saturday mornings when they could be anywhere else. They plant in a neighborhood that has been overlooked, making things a little greener, a little cooler, and filling in some pieces that have been missing for too long.

Every week alongside Recycle Reinvest, they're making Napier a little more like what every Nashville neighborhood deserves to be.💚

They planted 520 trees. 🌳

Johnson City's Tree Streets neighborhood had 41 reported crimes in 2023—property crime, vandalism, one of the city's known trouble spots. Tree coverage was at 5.2%, the lowest in Sullivan County. No shade. No gathering spaces. No community.

Spring 2024, residents and Appalachian Resource Conservation and Development Council got to work—520 native trees, every block, dense canopy plan.

By December 2024? Crime down 32%. Property crime down 41%.

An ETSU study found the reason: trees created social spaces. Porches got used again. Block parties came back. Eyes went back on the street.

The Johnson City PD budget is $18M. The tree project cost $42,000.
That's not a typo.

Green infrastructure isn't soft policy—it's smart policy. And Green Interchange is here to help bring it to every Tennessee community that needs it. 💚

A $4 tree. A $149 inhaler. Tennessee is choosing the inhaler — and kids are paying for it with their lungs. 🌳

Tennessee's pediatric asthma rate is nearly double the national average. And it's not random — it follows the tree line. Neighborhoods with less than 10% tree cover have the highest asthma rates. Memphis. Chattanooga. Nashville. The data is clear.
One mature tree filters 68 lbs of particulates a year. Areas with 30%+ canopy have 31% less childhood asthma. And $200 worth of trees planted in a high-asthma neighborhood prevents an estimated 17 new cases over 10 years.

TennCare spent $127M treating asthma in 2024. Two million dollars in trees could have prevented 40% of it.

We're not anti-medicine. We're pro-prevention — for all Tennessee families, not just those who can afford the co-pay.

A tree in your neighbor's yard keeps your street cooler. A tree near your school means cleaner air for your kids. Trees aren't decoration — they're infrastructure that protects people's health, comfort, and financial stability.

But tree planting has long followed income lines. Greener neighborhoods for those who can afford them. Concrete heat and higher asthma rates for everyone else.

That's the gap Green Interchange was built to close. Trees for everyone — not just those who can pay. 🌳✨
