This World Mental Health Day, we're recognizing that mental health and access to food go hand-in-hand.

Hunger takes a toll on the mind as well as the body, affecting stress, sleep, health, mood, and the ability to think clearly. And when someone is already facing a mental health challenge, keeping food on the table can get even harder.

At Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, we see it every day: when families have reliable access to food, stress eases, stability grows, and healthier, more hopeful lives become possible.

If you or someone you know needs reliable access to food, visit secondharvestmidtn.org/gethelp/ to find help near you. If you need immediate mental health support, call or text 988.

We're shining a spotlight on our Mobile Pantries, one of the ways we work with our Partners to fight hunger for children, families, and older adults in Middle and West Tennessee.

During our large-scale distributions, each Mobile Pantry provides our neighbors with several days' worth of groceries. This means a family is able to stock their kitchen, an older adult can focus on their health instead of food, and a child has the opportunity to head back to school with a full stomach and the energy to learn.

None of it happens without the people on the ground. Partners like Rural Hill Church of Christ and Celina United Methodist Church open their doors, organize volunteers, and show up for their neighbors so that families can get food close to home.

They're two of the 115 participating Partners that help us put on these large-scale distributions almost every weekend. Together, these churches, nonprofits, schools, and community organizations are the heart of our work.

Volunteers are needed in Smyrna!

We’ve added extra shifts at our Nacarato Distribution Center in Smyrna through the end of October, and we need neighbors ready to pitch in wherever help is needed most.

Shifts may include packing Disaster Relief boxes as we prepare for Hurricane Isaias, building other boxes for neighbors across Middle and West Tennessee, and keeping our daily work against food insecurity moving forward.

Sign up now at https://bit.ly/4je6las and help make sure our neighbors and those affected by the storm have the nourishment and support they need.

Years from now, you won't remember every errand you ran this fall. You'll remember the afternoon you spent alongside other volunteers, packing food for neighbors facing hunger. You'll remember how good it felt to see a full pallet at the end of your shift and know all that food was headed to children, families, and older adults right in your community.

Some of the best moments in life come from showing up for someone else, so join us in nourishing and empowering our neighbors so they can thrive! Sign up to volunteer at the link. https://www.secondharvestmidtn.org/get-involved/volunteer/

Over the past few weekends, we teamed up with Nashville Soccer Club and the Tennessee Titans to give back to our neighbors through community food drives! 🏈⚽
None of this would have been possible without everyone who showed up, donated, and spread the word, from fans at the stadium to volunteers on the ground.

Thank you to Nashville Soccer Club, Tennessee Titans, and every single person who contributed. This is what community looks like. 💙

That's a wrap for the Power of ONE! We are so grateful for everyone who participated this month. Whether you signed up for our emails, volunteered, donated food or funds, or simply shared our mission, you helped provide meals for children, families, and older adults facing hunger across the 46 counties we serve in Middle and West Tennessee. 💚

While 479,000 of our neighbors are facing food insecurity, we can create real change with the actions we take.

A special thank you to our incredible Power of ONE sponsors; AllianceBernstein, Twice Daily, Chick-fil-A, Delta Dental of Tennessee, Jackson, and Kroger for all their support in the fight against hunger!

It's Hunger Action Day!

We are celebrating the day by asking our staff how they take action to fight hunger in Middle and West Tennessee. Whether it's donating food, donating $1 to provide 4 meals to a family, or volunteering at our distribution centers, there are so many ways to help make sure our neighbors have access to nourishing food. Today and every day, we are encouraging our community to take action to help our neighbors in the 46 counties we serve.

How will you take action to fight hunger in your community?

We're excited to name Kelsey Ensign as our Volunteer of the Month!

When Kelsey started volunteering with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee in 2020, she fully grasped the scale of food insecurity in Middle and West Tennessee. She was looking for a meaningful way to give back to her neighbors, and Second Harvest ended up being the perfect fit. Her favorite shift is dry food sorting, where she gets to see what food goes directly to neighbors. What keeps her coming back? The community! "I love the friends that I've made volunteering here and the volunteer coordinators who do a great job running the shifts.” Her advice for first-time volunteers is to just give it a try! We are grateful for your dedication to Second Harvest, Kelsey!
