This Saturday, something relatively new will happen across Uganda. 🇺🇬

For three hours, communities across the country will come together to clean the places they share: homes, schools, markets, health facilities, places of worship, roads, drainage channels and public spaces.

Uganda officially launched National Cleaning Day in July 2026, designating the last Saturday of every month as a time for people across the country to take an active role in creating cleaner, healthier communities.

The idea is simple, but the reason behind it is much bigger.

Poor sanitation affects far more than how a community looks. It affects health. Waste can block drainage systems, contaminate the environment and contribute to the spread of preventable disease. National Cleaning Day is about building a culture where caring for shared spaces becomes a shared responsibility.

This Saturday, The Ayin Project team in Uganda will be taking part.

For us, there is a natural connection to the work we do every day.

Access to safe water is only one part of building healthier communities. Lasting change also depends on sanitation, hygiene, education and people having the knowledge and ownership to care for the places where they live, work and learn.

National Cleaning Day puts that idea into practice, not through one organization or one solution, but through people showing up together and taking responsibility for their communities.

Change doesn’t always begin with something big.

In our latest blog, Kailee Carney reflects on legacy, generosity, and what it means to “Be the Change” after more than a year of working alongside The Ayin Project.

It’s a personal reflection on how change moves from person to person, and how even the smallest acts can grow into something meaningful, lasting, and sometimes a little sweet.

Today is International Youth Day.

For three summers in a row, the TAP-SHIRE Summer Internship has connected young people across borders, from our interns here in the United States to the youth and communities at the heart of our work in Uganda.

Different countries. Different experiences. Connected through our mission of sustainable access to clean water, for all.

The challenges our interns explore are real challenges our team and communities in Uganda are working through every day. That connection gives learning purpose, builds understanding across cultures and reminds us that change in one part of the world can inspire action in another.

This is what be the change looks like to us: young people learning from one another, seeing beyond their own communities and discovering that they have something meaningful to contribute right now.

We’re proud to share that Joshua Kurtz, Founder and CEO of The Ayin Project, recently presented at the Esri User Conference in San Diego, joining global leaders using GIS to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Joshua’s session, Using ArcGIS Tools to Evaluate and Improve WASH in Ugandan Schools, demonstrated how The Ayin Project combines ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Survey123, and custom dashboards to evaluate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions in Ugandan primary schools.

By aligning field data with Uganda’s Ministry of Education standards and the UN 3-Star WASH Guidelines, the team is transforming observations into actionable insights. When this work began, none of the 12 participating schools met even the 1-Star WASH standard. Those findings revealed critical gaps while providing schools, communities, and decision-makers with the evidence needed to prioritize investments and drive lasting improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene.

At The Ayin Project, research is never collected for its own sake. It is used to guide investment, strengthen local decision-making, and ensure that solutions are informed by real conditions on the ground.

We’re grateful to Esri for providing a platform to share this work alongside innovators from around the world. As geospatial technology continues to shape the future of global development, we’re excited to see how data, research, and local partnerships can work together to improve access to safe water for every child.

Water filtration methods you might not expect. 🤔

What do eggshells and okra have in common?

They’re inspiring innovative water filtration solutions to real world water quality challenges currently being faced by The Ayin Project’s Water Research and Development Team in Uganda.

Today, a few of our sustainable engineering interns shared about their research during Chat & Brew at Patagonia, giving the community a glimpse into the innovative work they’ve been doing this summer. We continue to be incredibly encouraged by the curiosity, creativity, and commitment these interns have shown as they tackle real world challenges with thoughtfulness and purpose.

A special thank you to Patagonia Nashville for hosting our group and for their incredible generosity in donating not only their time, but also field gear to help equip our Uganda team. Your partnership helps make this work possible.

"We had a challenge of water — but now, hope is restored."
Meet Ruth, the Head Teacher at Lady Irene Demonstration School. Thanks to a new 5,000-litre rainwater tank, students and teachers finally have a reliable daily water supply.

At each TAP partner school, the need is identified by the school, and the solution is built together. School leaders, staff, and community members contribute what they can — materials, labour, time, and care — while our team walks alongside them with planning, technical skills, materials they can't source, and hands-on support.

It's not a handout. It is shared responsibility. Because this work doesn't only serve a school.

It supports students.
It reaches families.
It empowers entire communities.

And when a school helps build the solution, they also help carry the benefit forward.

This is what our walk-with model looks like.

“Now that we have a 5,000-litre tank, well installed, we are so hopeful.”

At Lady Irene Demonstration Primary School, a new water tank is more than infrastructure. It is relief for teachers who have spent years searching for water, hope for learners, and a meaningful step forward for the whole community.

As the rains come, this tank will help the school collect and store water closer to where it is needed most.

That is what it means to walk with a school: listening first, working together, and building solutions that last.

Rain fell for nearly six hours, and the road to the school was difficult to travel by motorcycle. But the work did not stop.

Together with the school, our team completed the water tank platform, installed the missing taps, plastered the platform, and finished the gutter installation.

The tank has been repaired.

At each TAP partner school, the need is identified by the school and the solution is built together. School leaders, staff, and community members contribute materials, labour, time, and care. Our team walks alongside them with planning, technical expertise, hard-to-source materials, and hands-on support.

This is not a handout. It is shared responsibility-and a stronger water system that can continue serving students, families, and the wider community.
