Swipe to meet our newest residents of the island 🐣💙
These are Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) chicks that have hatched over the past few weeks at Eel Point. Every summer, our shorebird monitors keep watch over nesting areas to helping give these tiny beachgoers the best chance at success.
You may notice sections of beach marked off with signs and symbolic fencing. Those areas create a little extra space for plover families during one of the most vulnerable stages of their lives.
Why does it matter? Piping Plovers are a threatened species in Massachusetts, and even small disturbances can separate chicks from their parents or push birds away from feeding and nesting habitat. Since chicks hatch ready to run (but not ready to fly), a little room goes a long way.
By sharing the shore we help make Nantucket’s beaches a place where both wildlife and people can thrive.
Welcome to the Nantucket, little ones 💙
