Swipe to meet our newest residents of the island 🐣💙

These are Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) chicks that have hatched over the past few weeks at Eel Point. Every summer, our shorebird monitors keep watch over nesting areas to helping give these tiny beachgoers the best chance at success.

You may notice sections of beach marked off with signs and symbolic fencing. Those areas create a little extra space for plover families during one of the most vulnerable stages of their lives.

Why does it matter? Piping Plovers are a threatened species in Massachusetts, and even small disturbances can separate chicks from their parents or push birds away from feeding and nesting habitat. Since chicks hatch ready to run (but not ready to fly), a little room goes a long way.

By sharing the shore we help make Nantucket’s beaches a place where both wildlife and people can thrive.

Welcome to the Nantucket, little ones 💙

Every trail you walk on Nantucket is cared for by someone. Gerry Holmes and the land management team at NCF maintain over 100 miles of trails across 9,000 acres - year-round, rain or shine. From clearing brush to hauling equipment, this is the hands-on work that keeps Nantucket’s open spaces open for everyone.

This is the first video of The Milestone Center Series, sharing the stories of the people who care for one-third of Nantucket and how the Milestone Center will support their work.

Our turtles are spotted up and ready to go dancing with you!

Unfortunately, the club closes if the wetlands disappear.

Spotted turtles spend their lives in shallow wetlands, marshes, and quiet freshwater habitats. Protecting these places gives turtles space to feed, nest, and keep doing their tiny turtle twirls.

As always, spin responsibly.

It’s an easy way to give back while shopping. Help spread the word and pick up a bag!

Northern Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor) at Windswept 💜

Each spring, violet-blue blooms emerge across the wetlands at Windswept, adding flashes of color to pond edges, marshes, and wet meadows.

While they're easy to admire, these native irises are quietly doing important work. Beneath the surface, their roots help hold soil in place, reducing erosion and slowing runoff before it reaches the waters that flow into Nantucket Harbor. Their flowers also provide nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators throughout the growing season.

Not bad for a flower that spends its life with wet feet.
