The health of eelgrass in Nantucket’s Harbor has long been a priority for the Nantucket Land & Water Council (NLWC). This year we are joined by Eve and Zack, our Eelgrass Project Managers. Together they will work on the monitoring and restoration of eelgrass in Nantucket harbor.

The health of our eelgrass meadows in Nantucket’s harbor is paramount to our community’s needs. The benefits of eelgrass are well documented, supporting habitats for scallops, reducing carbon emissions, mitigating impacts of coastal erosion, and improving the overall water quality.

Eelgrass is so vital to marine health some have often compared it to trees in a rainforest.

Led by Dr. Alyssa Novak, a Research Assistant Professor at Boston University, the NLWC and a wide range of community partners, including the Town of Nantucket Natural Resources Department, Anderson’s Stillwater Moorings, The Sunken Ship, and countless volunteers, have successfully transplanted over 20,000 shoots of eelgrass from donor sites to the half-acre restoration area in Nantucket Harbor in 2025 alone.

The NLWC will continue to use the information we collect, compare it to other eelgrass communities in our region, and work to improve this critical natural resource through research, education, and advocacy.

Nantucket has officially been designated as being in a Level 2 Drought Condition, triggering mandatory water conservation measures for properties served by Wannacomet Water.

Although the current green lawns and foggy mornings of June may not make the island feel particularly dry right now, drought determinations are based on more than appearance alone. State officials evaluate long-term precipitation trends, groundwater conditions, and other indicators of water availability.

Drought conditions are a reminder that not all landscapes are created equal when it comes to water use. A great way to build a resilient lawn is by incorporating plants native to Nantucket. Having evolved to thrive in Nantucket’s sandy soil and seasonal dry periods, native plants are a great choice for cultivating a lush yard!

For more information about what you can do to help mitigate the effects of the ongoing drought, please visit the link in our bio for an in-depth blog post.

On Saturday, June 6th, 2026, the Nantucket Land & Water Council hosted the Clean Water Classic on Nantucket Harbor for the first time. Our morning started with gorgeous clear skies and a great sunrise. Participants outfitted with our NEW 2026 Clean Water Classic Patagonia sunshirts with help from the Over. Following a safety briefing our participants entered the harbor to paddle for a purpose with the help of Sea Nantucket Paddle Sports.

After returning to shore, we enjoyed locally baked goods and fresh pressed juices generously donated by Lemon Press. Afterwards prizes were awarded for our swiftest participants. Congratulations to:
Individual Kayaker - Sarah Woodward
Tandem Kayakers - Julian Dallen and Michael Fuller
Paddleboarders (tied for first) - Sean Curry and Patrick Broemmel

Thanks to Slip 14, and Banh Pho all participants had the chance to win $100 gift cards to each shop, plus some great Slip 14 swag!

Thank you to our amazing volunteers, generous sponsors, and local Fire, EMS, and Police for helping facilitate a safe and fun event!

We’re so grateful to have been joined by our community to paddle for a purpose on such a lovely Saturday morning. We hope to see you on the water again soon!
