Did you know that Lily Pond was a thriving body of water sitting at the heart of Nantucket’s harbor life? That was until 11 year old Love Paddock came along in the 1720’s and accidentally drained the pond after digging a few idle gutters with a shell to watch the water flow along the channels she carved.

Today, the parks 6.5 acres center on a freshwater wetland that sustains an array of plant and animal life and absorbs runoff from the surrounding surfaces. Yet aging infrastructure, years of accumulated sediment, and low-laying lawns that pool during heavy storms mean the park is falling short of its full potential.

Pardon our appearance!

Cliff Beach at 41 Jefferson Ave is still open but our field crew recently installed snow fencing designed to alleviate some sand movement. As late fall and winter approaches, high winds and storms can cause significant sand movement on Nantucket’s beaches. We will keep the fences up until springtime.

Our summer pig project is officially complete!

This summer, five of Dylan & Caroline Wallace’s American Guinea Hogs called our New Lane property home to help us tackle the invasive plants that had taken over and we couldn’t be more excited about the results! The pigs did an incredible job clearing the land to allow us to begin reseeding with native species to restore the meadow. We hope the community enjoyed seeing these pigs hard at work!
