This article is about an outdoor lighting problem we are asked about a lot (but isn’t within our ability to address).

If you don’t subscribe to the Washington Post, the main takeaway is that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is promising to take a fresh look at the problem of blinding glare from vehicle headlights. This month it said it wants to modernize the “outdated vehicle lighting standards” by again asking for public comments and creating an expert panel to examine headlight glare.

Changes that help illuminate the road have become a serious annoyance for oncoming traffic.

Dark sky friendly outdoor lighting — fully shielded, a warmer color temperature, only on when needed for safety — would make it even more beautiful! The good news is that we’ve been assured that the hospital is planning to upgrade its outdoor lighting to comply with Nantucket’s outdoor lighting bylaw (as amended in 2023) to the fullest extent possible consistent with state and federal requirements for hospitals 🤗

Forget ghosts and vampires. 👻

You know what’s really scary? A porch light brighter than the Sun.

This Halloween, make your lighting a treat for everyone! 🎃 Choose warm-colored lighting, point it downward, and only use light where and when you need it.

Trick-or-treaters will be able to find their way safely to your door without the haunting glare, and your neighborhood will thank you for it!

Be a good neighbor by using dark sky friendly outdoor lighting.

When outdoor lights are too bright or poorly aimed, they don’t just wash out the stars. They spill into your neighbors’ windows, disrupt sleep, and harm wildlife.

Please comply with Nantucket’s outdoor lighting bylaw, as amended in 2023. The deadline for compliance is Jan. 1, 2029 for all lighting that was installed before the bylaw went into effect on Jan. 1, 2024. All lighting installed after that date should already be compliant!

The Outdoor Lighting Guide we published — available for free on our website — includes guidance and tips for complying with the new regulations.
