🌟 Did you know there’s a program that helps individuals on SSI or SSDI explore working without immediately losing their benefits?

It’s called Ticket to Work, and it’s a free program through Social Security.

Through this program, individuals can:

🔍 Explore job interests
💪 Build skills and confidence
📝 Get help with resumes and interviews
🤝 Receive ongoing support on the job

The goal isn’t to rush anyone into work — it’s to provide a safe, supported pathway toward independence.

✨ And the best part… it’s completely voluntary.

If you’ve ever wondered what working could look like for you, your child, or a family member, this is a great place to start.

One of our Job Seekers Program graduates, Emmy, recently achieved a great employment milestone by securing a temporary position at a new big box retail store in Conway. Seeking an opportunity to earn additional income, Emmy took on this role and quickly became a valuable member of the team.
During her time there, Emmy assisted with the store setup from start to finish, stocked merchandise, managed the fitting room area, and provided excellent customer service whenever needed. She embraced every task with a positive attitude and strong work ethic, making the experience a tremendous success.

What made this opportunity especially meaningful was Emmy's self-advocacy. Before her assignment ended, she took the initiative to speak with her manager about her interest in becoming a permanent employee should a position become available. Her manager encouraged her to continue checking the company's website, noting that new part-time opportunities would be posted soon.
Even more encouraging, Emmy received positive feedback from management, who praised her performance and shared that they would be happy to have her return in the future. Emmy's experience is a wonderful example of how confidence, hard work, and self-advocacy can create new opportunities and open doors for future employment success.

Bravo!

Bravo!

I just got off the phone with Delta Air Lines. I explained that Penny—our 20-year-old daughter with Down syndrome—will be flying on her own for the first time this summer. We talked through the options. Should we request a wheelchair so she has someone take her all the way onto the plane? Or should she simply request someone to walk her to the gate, after which she would board on her own? I’m going to talk those options through with Penny (and if you have suggestions for the best way to scaffold this next step for her, please send those our way). Meanwhile, I have to tell you what the Delta agent said as we were hanging up:

“This is so exciting. To give [people with Down syndrome] the freedom they so desperately need. We are so proud of her. Bravo. We will do everything we can to help her take this next step.”

Bravo, indeed. To Penny. To Delta. To everyone who wants to play a little part in taking the next step towards a world of belonging! (Penny has been practicing going through airline security on her own-see photo collage below from 2024. Now she’s ready for the next step!)
