The Murray Downtown Historic District represents the extant portion of the Murray City's historic commercial business district. Although the historic district consists primarily of commercial building stock from the late 1890s to the present, the neighborhood also included a strong residential component including both apartments above the commercial spaces and single-family dwellings.

This formed an urban core of the city, which contrasted to the mix of industrial development along the railroad corridor, west of the business district and scattered agricultural use throughout the rest of the community. The urban core remains a distinctive neighborhood despite the suburban development that engulfed the city after 1950.

This week, we’re highlighting Sideshow Productions Tattoo — a business that truly represents what being part of a downtown community is all about.

What makes Sideshow Productions special goes far beyond the incredible art coming out of the shop. The owner is someone who shows up for Downtown Murray — supporting fellow small businesses, getting involved in community events, giving back through charitable efforts, and genuinely wanting to see our downtown succeed.

And we love that their story is happening inside a piece of Murray history. Sideshow Productions is located in Murray’s original Iris Theatre building, built in 1915. More than a century ago, this building welcomed Murray residents as an early motion-picture and silent-film theater. Today, it’s still a place for creativity and art — just in a completely different form.

That’s one of our favorite things about Downtown Murray: seeing historic buildings continue to evolve while the small businesses inside them bring new life, personality, and purpose to our downtown.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have Sideshow Productions Tattoo as part of MCDD and Downtown Murray.

Ever wonder how Murray, Utah got its name?

It isn't named after a scenic mountain, a winding river, or an early pioneer. The city actually takes its name from a fascinating 19th-century leader: Eli Houston Murray!

Check out these 4 quick historical snapshots of our city's namesake:

🔸 Teenage General – He enlisted in the Union Army at 18 and commanded troops as a Brigadier General by age 21.

🔸 White House Tie – In 1880, President Rutherford B. Hayes personally selected him to serve as Utah’s Territorial Governor.

🔸 Identity Makeover – Before 1883, this area was known as South Cottonwood. The local post office officially rebranded the town to honor Governor Murray.

🔸 Political Firebrand – He was never one to back down from a fight, famously clashing with local figures over voting rights and statehood.

Next time you're driving down State Street through Historic Downtown Murray, you're driving right through a legacy born in the 1800s.
