With SB229 now in effect, employees hired or rehired after implementation will be placed in the Enhanced Benefits Package (EBP) rather than the traditional leave structure.
UPEA is closely monitoring the rollout of the EBP to make sure it delivers real, meaningful benefits to new employees, not just a rebranded system with less value.
Which program works better for you: Legacy (current) or the Enhanced Benefits Program (EBP)? You have until Nov. 20 to opt out of the EBP.

Paying UPEA dues through payroll deduction is a small convenience that makes a big difference. It's simple, automatic, and one less thing for busy public employees to manage.
UPEA is committed to ensuring employees maintain the ability to pay dues this way, protecting it from efforts to eliminate or restrict payroll deduction as an option. We're also advocating to keep payroll deduction private, so the state doesn't have visibility into which employees are UPEA members.

Mayson Weissinger is joining UPEA as our newest Employee Relations Representative. She’s a University of Oklahoma grad with a journalism and mass communications degree and a background in fundraising, professional writing, and editorial management, with a focus on sustainability and conservation.

Her interest in labor rights started in college, when she learned about the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. It sparked a lasting commitment to making sure workers have a voice and are treated fairly.

She’s looking forward to meeting members across Utah, advocating for your interests, and helping build a stronger community among state employees.

Outside of work, you’ll find her producing and volunteering at local events, browsing the valley’s libraries and independent bookstores, or exploring Utah’s parks with her wife and their dogs.

When you see Mayson out in the field, say hi, tell her about the work you do, and let her know how UPEA can keep supporting you and your fellow public employees.

Remote work isn't a perk, it's a proven benefit that saves the state money, saves employees time, and supports work-life balance, employee health, and productivity.
UPEA is committed to maintaining the current remote work policy and protecting it from rollback. We're advocating for remote work to be codified in statute, so the policy has lasting protection instead of being subject to change at any agency's discretion. And where possible, we want to see the program expanded to more employees.
Right now, the policy can change at any agency’s discretion. We want it written into law so it sticks. That’s why UPEA will be on the Hill this session, advocating for remote work and the rest of our 2027 Legislative Package.

Utah's public employees deserve a retirement system that treats them fairly, no matter when they were hired. UPEA is urging lawmakers to fully fund the Tier II Utah Retirement System contribution rate increase, ensuring the cost isn't absorbed by employees or agencies scrambling to make up the difference.
