Happy International Women’s Day!

Today we honor Elizabeth DeLong, the first president of the Utah Association of the Deaf in 1909.

At a time when women rarely held leadership roles, this Deaf woman helped lead and shape our community. Her leadership reminds us that Deaf women have always been an important part of our history.

Thank you to Elizabeth DeLong and all Deaf women who continue to lead, advocate, and strengthen our community today.

Last night, a key budget committee in the Utah Legislature approved a recommendation to change the law that protects the pay of teachers and other educators at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind. The full budget bill has not passed yet, but this change will now be included in it.

Those pay protections were created after a staffing crisis to help keep qualified teachers serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

If removed, it could affect teacher stability — and that impacts students.
