Muncie Scholar House helps single mothers graduate from college or a certified apprenticeship program.

MSH provides stable housing, coordinated childcare, help with school admissions and financial aid, and coaching all they way through to graduation.

When a single mom crosses that stage, her children see what’s possible. That’s how a cycle breaks.

Heartland Scholar House is a finalist in the 3Rivers Big Give, and public votes count toward a $75,000 grant to help more single moms see it through. It’s one vote per person, it takes about a minute, and anyone can vote, wherever you live.

One vote. One minute. A shot at $75,000 for single moms earning their degrees.

A flat tire. A sick kid. A midterm on Friday. She still shows up. Heartland Scholar House gives single parents a Family Advocate, an Academic Coach, and a fund for the moments that could end a semester.

She chose welding. A field where she's often the only woman in the room.

The cost of equipment stops a lot of people before they ever strike an arc. We made sure it never stopped her. Our program supplied everything she needed and she took it from there.

Just weeks in, her professor already counts her among the top students and has started handing her higher-level tools ahead of her peers.

Muncie Scholar House's very first industrial-technology scholar is a single mom walking into a trade most people never picture her in, and rising straight to the top of it.

We cleared the path. She's the one running down it.

Every year, thousands of single mothers start college determined to build a better life for their families. Most never finish. Not because they lack the drive, but because they're carrying it all alone: rent, childcare, work, and school, with no safety net beneath them.

Heartland Scholar House exists to change that. We provide single mothers with affordable housing, childcare, and a community of support so they can focus on earning their degrees and breaking the cycle of poverty for good.

"By Degrees" tells their story. The setbacks, the late nights, and the hard-won moments of triumph that most people never see.
