Charlie Huntington did a great job coordinating tonight’s cleanup effort in partnership with “Isle of Palms Cleanup crew”! Based on the buckets of trash collected we did great. 👍. Well done Charlie!

In addition to coordinating with Mrs Susan Hill Smith, (cofounder of the IOP cleanup crew, who provided all of our supplies and some great conservation knowledge and pre-training ahead of our activity) Charlie also integrated his schoolmates who also needed service hours. Between parent, student, and scout participants we had a little over 25 people helping. Many hands make light work!

Wednesday was another fun day at Camp Daniel Boone with a chill evening. Some scouts participated in evening riffle shooting, a few survived the Gaga ball pit while the rest of the Troop built a campfire for scouts in our campsite. As they say at CBD “Adventure Is Out There”.

Tuesday and Wednesday morning activities are keeping the scouts busy. Several scouts enjoyed an evening at Boonesboro Village while the adults attended Cracker Barrel. Weather was a chilly 55 degrees today. Our Troop raised the flag at the morning flag ceremony.

Day 1 completed. Scouts earned their first merit badges of the week. It was Italian night in the dinning hall. We won two rounds of tug a war while our older scouts partook in archery. Night ended with the opening of the world famous Boonesboro Village).

We’ve arrived at Camp Daniel Boone in Canton,NC. Early 7:15 am breakfast and merit badge classes are underway.

Philmont 2026.
Troop 529 had a crew of 9 scouts and 3 advisors. It was an amazing 7 day experience to watch the boys tackle the trek head-on and 100% independently.

We were scheduled for 33 miles and ended up 50+ which included a few wrong turns, a detour for conservation project, rock climbing excursions and super fun side hikes.

A few learned skills were:
- setting up and breaking down camp quickly with delegated jobs
- larks head knot for bear bags
- taught line hitch (friendly reminder 😉)
- how to preserve tree bark from rope damage
- raising dining fly with hiking poles
- how to treat blisters and keep going
- proper use of hand tools for trail maintenance (spoon(shovel), pick axe, mcleod, truper, axe, etc)
- climbing knot (figure 8)
- trail cleanliness for cooking
- accounting for food and supply provisions
- how to do more with less (clothing/gear)
- how to plan for water needs in arid conditions.
- ways to purify water
- prioritize packing order and weight distribution among crew mates
- group communication while on trail (when to stop, go, break, encourage, remind, and support)
- how to reload shotgun shells
- shooting 12 gauge targets, 6 shooter 38 special revolver, lever action 38 rifle, and 20 gauge shotgun clay pigeon shooting from traps.
- roping a steer the cowboy way
- cowboy tug-of-war (first 2 to rope a log and pull)
- how to keep gear dry in constant rain conditions (thankful for arid climate for quick drying gear) - take advantage of sunlight between rain clouds)
- how to lead and how to follow

Jack had a fantastic Eagle Court of Honor in the comforts of his backyard. Excellent job to the Thoren family for creating such a wonderful environment in their backyard for such a momentous occasion. Congratulations Jack!
