Troop 529 dug up some old bushes and planted brand new beautiful hollies on two sides of St Benedict Catholic Church today. We had a great turnout of scouts, and helpful oversight from the church gardening committee. They even brought Chick-fil-a for the boys!

Arden had a great turnout for his National Conservation award project. His goal was to remove Chinese private (and invasive species) and replace it with native species. Fantastic project, and well administered by Arden’s team. Partnered with Mt Pleasant Clean Water.

Troop 529 was busy today!

We hosted a station at Carolina Park Elementary’s Camping Literacy event. We had four stations in one classroom and about 100 kids filtered through and visited our area: Orienteering, knot-tying, camping trivia, and camping gear expo. Our scouts had a great time interacting with all of the younger elementary school kids. Some of them were genuinely interested, and one little boy exclaimed, “Boy Scouts are REAL?!

As soon as that event was over, we quickly pivoted over to our normal scout meeting at St. Benedict Catholic Church. We hosted an American Flag retirement ceremony and retired 22 cotton based flags collected by the Knights of Columbus. Matthew Michi did a great job as MC of the event and the boys enforced a very reverent ceremony in honor of the retired flags and veterans and our country. One flag was ceremoniously deconstructed and was retired first. After that each scout got to retire, one or more of the folded American flags.

It was a well run event, and the boys did a great job. The second half of our meeting was split into Camping preparation and games based on who is participating in the next camp out.

Great job, Troop 529! You boys are really a benefit to our community!

Troop 529 had a great DIY Camp Gadget Expo tonight. The boys had a good time using materials from our trailer to create their inventions.

Also a big congratulations to Walker Galey for completing his Eagle Scout Board of Review

Troop 529 had a splash rafting down 7ft Falls on the Chatooga River this weekend. This was the first standard troop campout for several of our younger scouts and they did great! The different patrols made spaghetti, burgers, pancakes, eggs and bacon. A great time had by all.

Troop 529 had a fantastic court of honor MC’d by Jack Pucket. Refreshments were supplied by our generous parents. Scouts earned lots of merit badges, multiple rank advancements, and several triple crowns and grand slams were awarded for participating in multiple high adventures.. it sure is a good time to be in scouting America! Great, great job Troop 529!

Troop 529 participated in the 911 hike on the Ravenel bridge on September 11. There was a great showing of Scouts in our Charleston area from other Troops and Cub Scout packs as well as first responders and military. We carried our flags and we hiked to the second spire on the bridge and back. We did have a threat of weather; however, it ended up being a beautiful display of lightning off in the distance of the southern horizon. There was a brief speech, acknowledgment, and moment of silence prior to our hike as one large group. It was a good reminder of how we can all come together as United States citizens and more importantly as human beings wherever we live.

Charlie Huntington did a great job coordinating tonight’s cleanup effort in partnership with “Isle of Palms Cleanup crew”! Based on the buckets of trash collected we did great. 👍. Well done Charlie!

In addition to coordinating with Mrs Susan Hill Smith, (cofounder of the IOP cleanup crew, who provided all of our supplies and some great conservation knowledge and pre-training ahead of our activity) Charlie also integrated his schoolmates who also needed service hours. Between parent, student, and scout participants we had a little over 25 people helping. Many hands make light work!
