This historic landmark was reborn using reclaimed lumber, Union Square granite, and even rainwater collection tanks. 💧♻️

Did you know . . . 🤔 The Moraga Barn was never actually a barn? Seriously!

Built in 1911, it was likely meant to be a hotel. By 1915, John Fleuti turned it into the Moraga Bar & Mercantile—a one-stop shop for groceries, hardware, dry goods, and drinks.

When the Sacramento Northern Railway came through without a station master, manager Helen Hetfield stepped up—serving as station master, registrar, postmaster, and even the local phone operator ☎️. Iconic.

After Prohibition, it became the Moraga Bar—until a 1935 law banned 🚫buildings from being called “bar.”

The fix? Add an “n” with some paint 🎨.

And just like that—the Moraga Barn was born… without ever being a barn.

What is the current rendition of this historical building? Check here next time!
