Catholic Institute for Lasallian Social Action CILSA

Catholic Institute for Lasallian Social Action CILSA CILSA is working toward the day when all people collaborate to enact social justice, inclusion, and sustainability in every aspect of life.

CILSA's mission is to be a catalyst in creating and sustaining transformative educational experiences inspired by the Catholic, Lasallian and Liberal Arts traditions through partnerships with students, faculty, staff and community partners. We are an academic center that aims to be a national leader in the scholarship, theory and practice of community engagement. The HEAD, HEART and HANDS framewor

HEAD – CILSA programs foster students’ intellectual and personal development through academic exploration of issues related to justice that prompt critical thinking in and outside the classroom. For faculty and staff, CILSA provides resources, materials and education in best practices to integrate social justice within the curricular and co-curricular experience. HEART – CILSA programs nurture students’ critical reflection of their experiences as they relate to meeting academic, intellectual, and other personal goals. The process promotes an understanding premised on knowledge coupled with compassion. HANDS – CILSA programs provide an array of service activities through coursework and co-curricular experiences that enable students, faculty, and staff to apply their knowledge and understanding in order to engage critical social issues and promote social justice for the common good.

Check out this reflection from Dr. Kathy Littles...

“During 44 Days Honoring Black History, we are charged to reflect on how the historic struggle against racism and oppression in Black communities directly aligns with the Catholic, Lasallian, and Liberal Arts mission of Saint Mary’s College,” said Kathy Littles, associate provost for faculty affairs and senior diversity officer. “It is in the Lasallian spirit that we invite the College community to join us for the 44 Days celebration as we acknowledge the rich stories, cultural heritage, social, political, and economic contributions of Black communities in our past, present, and future.”

This year’s theme, 44 Days: Telling Our Own Stories, celebrates the historical legacy of Black families gathering to share the stories of their ancestors, elders, and community predecessors. Founded on West African tradition, the family or community Griot (storyteller), is a repository for stories, songs, poems, and music that is passed along the generations to preserve genealogies and celebrate African culture.

Virtual events will be held from Feb. 8 to Mar. 23, starting with a Black Student Convocation on Feb. 13. Scheduled signature events include prolific speakers, dynamic workshops, engaging discussions, and a host of meaningful programs. See the calendar at bit.ly/3tG5RgP
