MAFD would like to congratulate Nick Bliss and Eric Bartusch on becoming Mora Area Firefighters! They have served their year on probation, attended many calls, underwent training and classes to complete their firefighter 1, firefighter 2, and hazmat certifications, and have proven to be a great addition to our team! They received their badges tonight! We thank them and their families for their time and dedication! Congrats Nick and Eric!

Two minutes — the time it takes to brush your teeth, load the dishwasher or tidy up your desk.

But could you and your loved ones get out of your home in that amount of time?

On average, that’s how long people have to escape during a fire, and that time begins when the fire starts.

That’s why it’s so important to have working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan — so you’re alerted as quickly as possible and you know exactly how to get out.

In the first four months of 2026, there have already been 35 confirmed fire deaths.

Last year, there were 61 fire deaths in total. Even one death is too many.

Make a plan, test your alarms and practice your escape plan.

Due to dry conditions, high winds, and low humidity, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for today, May 16, for parts of central and northeast Minnesota.

While the Red Flag Warning is in effect:
❌ Don’t burn brush and yard debris!
❗️Campfires are discouraged in the are where Red Flag Warnings are in effect
⚠️Be extra cautious with outdoor activities that could produce heat or a spark. Campfires are discouraged.
đź‘€Check ash piles from wood-burning stoves or heaters and any recent fire for lingering heat. Embers can stay hot for days, even months, and rekindle in Red Flag conditions. If you find heat, drown with water, stir, and repeat until it's out COLD.
