Mobile County Mourns the Passing of Former Sheriff Sam Cochran
The Mobile County Sheriff's Office joins the Cochran family, friends, members of the law enforcement community, and the citizens of Mobile County in mourning the passing of former Sheriff Sam Cochran, whose lifetime of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to public safety left an indelible mark on our community and the State of Alabama.
Sheriff Cochran dedicated 48 years of his life to law enforcement, serving the people of Mobile County with integrity, compassion, and determination. After being elected Sheriff in 2006, he was entrusted by the citizens of Mobile County with four consecutive terms, serving until his retirement in January 2023. His career was defined by a steadfast commitment to protecting others and a belief that every person deserved to feel safe in their home and community.
Throughout his tenure, Sheriff Cochran championed initiatives that strengthened public safety, modernized law enforcement operations, and built stronger partnerships throughout Mobile County. Among the accomplishments for which he was most proud was leading the effort to curb the m**hamphetamine epidemic by advocating for stronger controls on pseudoephedrine sales. His work helped pave the way for Alabama's electronic tracking system for pseudoephedrine purchases, a measure that dramatically reduced m**hamphetamine production throughout the state and protected countless families from the dangers associated with clandestine m**h labs.
Sheriff Cochran understood that effective law enforcement required more than enforcing the law. He believed in finding lasting solutions to complex problems, investing in the people who served alongside him, and building relationships based on trust, accountability, and respect. Under his leadership, the Mobile County Sheriff's Office earned a reputation for professionalism, innovation, and dedication to serving the public.
His influence extended far beyond the walls of the Sheriff's Office. Throughout his career, he mentored deputies, investigators, supervisors, and public safety professionals who would go on to lead agencies across the region. His willingness to teach, encourage, and share his experience helped shape generations of law enforcement officers who continue to serve with the values he instilled.
To those who worked beside him, Sheriff Cochran was more than a leader. He was a mentor, a teacher, and a friend. He expected excellence but never forgot the importance of treating people with dignity and respect. He led with humility, listened before he spoke, and earned the trust of those around him through his character and unwavering dedication to public service.
Current Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch reflected on Sheriff Cochran's legacy:
“I wanted to share a few words reflecting on my time serving under Sheriff Cochran. Having worked with him in various capacities for over thirty years, he was not only a mentor but a friend who deeply influenced my career. Sheriff Cochran took great pride in developing and nurturing future leaders in law enforcement. I will deeply miss his friendship, as well as the ability to call him for advice or to bounce ideas off of him. I often told people that Sam Cochran was one of the smartest law enforcement officers I’ve ever known, and one of the best politicians Mobile has ever had.”
The Mobile County Sheriff's Office extends its heartfelt sympathy to the Cochran family and asks the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Sheriff Cochran's watch has ended, but his legacy of service, honor, and dedication to the people of Mobile County will endure for generations.
