ALA is heartbroken at the passing of country music legend, cultural icon, and champion of literacy Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s award-winning Imagination Library initiative, inspired by her father’s inability to read or write, has put hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children across America and was considered by her to be one of her greatest achievements.

“We’re giving books to kids who wouldn’t have a chance to get them otherwise,” she told American Libraries in a 2018 interview. “A lot of people think this is just for poor children—it’s for all children. It’s important to get books into the hands of any child that we can.”

ALA was proud to confer Dolly with an honorary lifetime membership, the Association’s highest honor, in 2023 for her lasting impact on librarianship, libraries, and the communities they serve.

Dolly was also part of ALA’s Celebrity READ campaign, in which she holds a copy of 'The Little Engine That Could.'

“I’ve always related to that book because I’m the little engine that did!” she said.

We were thrilled to welcome Vicki Fussell, Program Specialist with the Alabama Department of Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention, for a site visit today. (L: Vicki Fussell; M: Christy Jones-Hudson; R: Audrey Howard)

Vicki took a look at our latest and final Parent Toolbox for the program year, which focuses on helping parents recognize and address vision concerns in young children. This toolbox includes fun eyeglass crafts for children, magnifying glasses, a learning card, and a copy of The Smallest Pair by local author Melody Patterson. It also includes information to help parents stay on top of their child’s vision screening needs.

It was a wonderful morning to share a little of the work happening through Parent Toolbox and talk about how this program continues to support families in Mobile.

Parent Toolbox is funded by the Alabama Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention.

It might be back-to-school time for many families, but if you have a 2-, 3-, or 4-year-old at home, you don’t have to feel left out!

Our Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program is FREE and provides families with quality, age-appropriate lessons and learning activities similar to what children experience in a preschool setting.

The best part? You decide when the learning happens. Lessons take place right in your home, and we provide the supplies, the activities, and a Home Visitor who comes to your home each week to walk through and role-play the lessons with you. Over the past few weeks we had the privilege of providing nearly 100 of these clear backpacks to families enrolled in our programs! 🎒

Parents also took home some of the more costly school essentials, including classroom-compliant headphones and a spill-proof water bottle.

We hope these supplies make the start of the school year a little easier for our families. Wishing all of our children a great first day and a school year full of proud moments!

Yesterday was the sweetest gathering! 💕

Moms came together for guidance from a board-certified lactation consultant, baby weigh-ins to see how their little ones are growing, a delicious brunch, and everyone took home a free breast pump.

These gatherings are such a great reminder that parenting isn't something you have to do alone. There's something special about being in a room with other moms who understand the ups and downs and support one another. A special thanks to Scotty Thompson with Gulf Coast Lactation for helping us make it happen.
