Soft Landing Missoula is so proud of the 2026 High School graduates! Each of these students has shown incredible dedication, growth, and resilience, and we are honored to celebrate this milestone with them.
Wakati arrived from Tanzania in 2017 and has been part of the Soft Landing community ever since. A leader on and off the field, he thrived at Loyola and is now headed to the University of Montana to study Business on an academic scholarship.
Margrate, who came to Missoula from Zambia, has been a dedicated student and active community member throughout her time here. After graduating from Hellgate with honors and staying involved in track and Girls Leadership Council, she is excited to begin Pre-Nursing at UM.
Amani graduates from Hellgate with a strong desire to keep learning and growing. She is focused on improving her English as she works toward her goal of attending college in the future.
Mohammad has been a hardworking and vibrant member of the Missoula community since arriving from Syria. Now a Hellgate graduate, he is looking ahead with big dreams of pursuing acting and becoming a movie star.
Gloria, originally from Congo, has grown into herself during her time in high school while building meaningful friendships along the way. She now plans to continue her journey at Missoula College, where she will study Pre-Nursing.
Khadija quickly became a leader in her school and the Soft Landing community after arriving from Syria. After graduating early from Hellgate, she is headed to the University of Montana to begin her studies on the Pre-Law track.
Nuria has balanced hard work and ambition as a member of the Missoula community and now as a Hellgate graduate. Currently working as a CNA, she hopes to continue her path in emergency services in the future.

World Refugee Day at Soft Landing has come a long way. What started as a small soccer tournament has grown into a full day of celebration—but soccer is still where it all begins.

Every year, people show up ready to play. And that’s the beauty of it: no matter where you’re from, soccer is something so many of us already know. It doesn’t require translation. It’s a shared language. You can step onto the field with complete strangers and, within minutes, you’re a team!

From there, the day opens up into something even bigger. Families, partners, volunteers, and neighbors gather to share food, music, games, and plenty of dancing (plus lots of face painting). What starts on the field carries through the entire celebration.

Inspired by the people we’re honored to walk alongside we’re reminded every year that celebration isn’t extra, it’s essential. Creating space for joy and belonging matters. And this day is one small but powerful way we get to do that together.

Take a look at some of our favorite moments from past World Refugee Day celebrations.

For Edward, World Refugee Day has always been a big celebration. He remembers helping organize the big party, dancing, inviting people, and creating a sense of shared joy.

“It’s our day,” he says. “We are working together, coming together, and feeling like this is our day.”

This spirit of celebration, community, and belonging is what we try to bring to our events in Missoula. When refugees gather here, it’s a chance to reconnect with traditions, share food, music, and stories, and remind each other that they are not alone.

June is here, and it is World Refugee Awareness Month! This is a time to reflect on what it means to welcome and to recognize the strength, resilience, and contributions of people rebuilding their lives in new communities.
We are also looking ahead to World Refugee Day on June 20, a day the community has come together to mark for the past decade. It is a time to celebrate, to listen, and to stand alongside our neighbors as they share their cultures, stories, and experiences.
Throughout the month, we will be sharing photos and reflections from past World Refugee Day celebrations, along with stories that highlight what this day means to members of the refugee community.
We hope you will follow along, learn with us, and join in celebrating what welcome looks like in Missoula.

This month we are celebrating our community of givers. We have been talking with donors about what drew them to Soft Landing Missoula.
Tom’s path to giving came about a bit unconventionally. After running for public office, he chose to redistribute remaining campaign funds back into the community by supporting an organization he felt reflected the values of his campaign and his supporters.
To Tom, Soft Landing Missoula stood out.
When talking about why, he shared –
“Organizations like Soft Landing only exist in places where people truly want to welcome others.”
As a local business owner, Tom sees both the challenges and strengths of the Missoula community. Through volunteering and personal connection with new neighbors, he’s seen first-hand how Soft Landing helps people find belonging.
"If you are looking for a way to invest directly into your community then I really think that Soft Landing Missoula is the best place to give to. They strengthen the institutions that make all of us able to and want to live here. Stronger social safety network throughout Missoula and everyone can benefit from this and helps build a stronger community." Tom

This month we are celebrating our community of givers! We have been talking with donors about what drew them to Soft Landing Missoula.
For Jane, giving began during a season of reflection. In 2020, as she retired and navigated the uncertainty of the pandemic, she knew she wanted to find a meaningful way to stay connected to her community. Monthly giving felt like a steady and intentional way to do that.
When talking about why she continues to give, she shared –
“It has been a lot of fun to see Soft Landing evolve… it feels like one of the most important organizations we have at this moment.”
Jane values the way Soft Landing adapts to meet changing needs while staying rooted in its mission. Through her experiences with United We Eat and as a donor, she’s seen small but powerful moments of impact.

This month we are celebrating our community of givers. We have been talking with donors about what drew them to Soft Landing Missoula. For Scott and Joann, giving started with a small gathering. They had recently moved to Missoula and were looking for ways to get involved when they first heard about Soft Landing. When talking to them about what made them want to give they said -
“This isn’t a handout, It’s about helping people build their lives.”
With family histories rooted in immigration, their support is deeply personal. They’ve seen how newcomers contribute, build, and strengthen communities, and they believe Missoula should be no different. Over time, their giving has grown with Soft Landing. “They’ve built trust,” they said. “You can see the impact. The programs keep growing, but the mission stays the same.”

We’re so excited to share that Soft Landing Missoula has been selected as a 2026 Project for Awesome grant recipient! This means we can deepen one-on-one support for new neighbors in Missoula and create more ways for neighbors new and old to connect across cultures. 💛

Thank you to everyone who watched, voted, shared, donated, and supported us!!

And congratulations to all of the other incredible charities selected this year! 🌟

We’ve loved seeing the boys group grow through monthly climbing nights with 🧗‍♂️ Over time, their skills and confidence have taken off, but even more meaningful are the connections they’ve built. From learning new techniques to forming friendships with older SLM youth and young adults who now come back to volunteer, this space has become something really special. A big shoutout to Jeanvier, who the kids love, and to the amazing Here MT community members who show up to belay, mentor, and “show them the ropes.”

Beyond the boys group, we’ve also hosted a middle school GIRLS! climbing night with all women belayers, plus a young adult night connecting participants to Here MT’s ongoing climbing opportunities for BIPOC Missoulians. Grateful for this partnership and all the growth it’s creating!!
