Postcards from California 🌅

This week, crucial members of the DVCC team are in California participating in the Praxis Strengthening Rural Advocacy Cohort, an incredible opportunity focused on enhancing advocacy and services for survivors while building stronger, healthier organizations from the inside out.

Those of us left behind are hoping they bring back sunny weather AND some avocados. 🥑🤞

Through this work, our team is identifying gaps that may exist in our agency, and working towards solutions that build our capacity to best assist survivors and the staff who serve them. Investing in our people means investing in our mission—and ultimately creating a stronger foundation for survivors, today and for years to come. 💜

Some moments remind us that a heart for service is one of the greatest gifts we can pass on.

In the first photo, Jill McDonald is serving our community through the Domestic Violence Crisis Center while her daughter Courtney volunteers her time and talents during KX Founder’s Day. Years prior, Jill is pictured during her time at the Roosevelt Park Zoo, alongside her daughter Alyssa volunteering as the Easter Bunny.

Two different nonprofits. Two different seasons of life. The same spirit of giving back.✨

Jill has dedicated her career to organizations that strengthen our community—and along the way, she has shown her daughters the value of compassion, service, and showing up for others.

What a beautiful full-circle moment, and a reminder that when children see kindness in action, they often carry it forward.💜

Moose on the loose spotted at the DVCC! (thankfully we didn’t need to call in help from Minot Park District 😅)

Our Public Affairs Coordinator, Carisa Ashley, was welcomed at the Minot Loyal Order of the Moose, speaking with members about the work happening at the Domestic Violence Crisis Center.

We were especially excited to receive a herd of Tommy Moose stuffed animals to help bring comfort, security, and a few extra smiles to children staying in our shelter. Sometimes a soft friend to hold can make a hard day feel a little less scary. 🫎💜

We’re proud to celebrate our Executive Director, Jill McDonald, who served as a keynote speaker this week at the North Dakota Association of Nonprofits Conference alongside Christy Miller, Director of Souris Valley United Way.

Together, they shared the powerful “First Lead Yourself” philosophy—encouraging nonprofit professionals to prioritize their own well-being, recognize the signs of burnout, and create a plan for navigating the challenges that come with serving others.

Nonprofit work is meaningful, but it can also be demanding. Jill and Christy’s message was a reminder that sustainable leadership starts with caring for ourselves so we can continue caring for our communities.

Thank you for representing our organization and advocating for healthy, resilient leadership across North Dakota. 💜
