Future marketers in action! Third graders at in St. Paul had the opportunity to interview local business owners, including our founder, Taylor Sorrells, as part of a project exploring entrepreneurship and community impact.

Students learned about each business by asking thoughtful questions about their mission, who they serve, the resources they use, their why, and how they measure success. Afterward, they put their creativity to work by designing marketing materials to help tell each business’s story.

We were blown away by how well these young learners captured the heart of Read With Me MN and our mission to promote diversity in children’s literature. Their creativity, attention to detail, and enthusiasm were truly inspiring.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting a few resources from local creators who are helping children build confidence, emotional awareness, and self-esteem.

books ‘You Are Beautiful’ and ‘Boys Do Cry’ center on affirming Black children and creating space for important conversations about identity, emotions, and self-worth.

social-emotional workbook gives children practical opportunities to identify, process, and express their feelings while building healthy coping skills. Dr. Fulton is also the author of ‘Brown Child You Are…Positive Affirmations for Children of Color’, a book that celebrates identity and self-love.

Looking for ways to support the children in your life? Try reading books that reflect their identities and experiences. Asking open-ended questions about characters’ feelings. Using journals, drawing, or art as emotional outlets. Creating regular check-ins to talk about emotions. Most importantly, heal yourself so you can model healthy ways to express and cope with big feelings.

Do you have any recommendations? What books have helped spark important conversations with the children in your life? ❤️

“Keep going.” That was the message woven through so many of the answers in our recent artist interviews.

We’re so thankful to the artists who took the time to reflect, share, and speak to the younger versions of themselves.

This is just a glimpse into the conversations we’ve been having behind the scenes, and there’s more to come from these interviews soon… including who will be joining us for More Than Lit on August 7 👀

At R.E.A.D. With Me MN, we believe stories, representation, and creative voices can inspire children to see their own potential. Sometimes the words we most needed as children are the same words that help us grow today.

Now it’s your turn:
What advice would you give your younger self?

Mother’s Day is coming up! We have some great local authors that highlight the amazing Mother’s we have in our lives. It’s a Mom by who runs which we are big fans of! Plus Far, Far, Away by who does many many things for the literacy community here and I’ve especially been enjoying her Picture Book Salons! I picked up both of these from today so they are in stock!

In March, Rosemond Sarpong Owens visited Prodeo Academy Primary in St. Paul to teach First Grade students about Adinkra symbols. In honor of Women’s History Month, she also shared her book ‘The Girl Who Became President: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’ and invited students to reflect on the women in their lives who they admire and love.

After Ms. Rose left, students continued coloring Adinkra symbols from her coloring book, still holding so much excitement. One student said, “This is the best day ever,” and another added, “Yes! We are soooo lucky!” They absolutely loved Ms. Rose, and it was a powerful reminder of why this work matters so much. Thank you, !

What you’re seeing here is more than a storytime, it’s a community coming together to make literacy visible, joyful, and deeply meaningful.📚

Each month at Café Marguerite, something really special is happening. What started as a simple question, “Do you have any book recommendations?” has grown into a beautiful partnership between Read With Me MN, Café Marguerite, and the Epsilon Rho chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

These storytimes create space for children to see Black men as readers, storytellers, and role models, modeling the joy and power of literacy in a way that sticks. Representation matters, and moments like these leave a lasting impact.

We’ve also had the honor of featuring local authors of color, giving families the chance to hear stories directly from the voices behind the books. It’s intimate, it’s joyful, and it’s rooted in connection. This particular day featured local author 💕

Because of generous donors, the first five families at each storytime receive a free book so the stories don’t end here. They go home, get reread, and become part of everyday life.

We’re so grateful for this growing community and everyone who continues to show up, support, and believe in this work!

📅 Join us every third Saturday of the month 9-10am

We can’t wait to keep reading with you ❤️
