Join us for a special storytime with local author Cierra Hopson creator of The Ciyana Series!

Meet Ciyana, enjoy a storytime celebrating the important roles within a family, enjoy delicious food and drinks from Café Marguerite, hear a story from Epsilon Rho Chapter, and be the first five families there to receive a free book!

This Saturday, October 3, the Loppet is hosting a special storytime celebrating the physical book release of Phyllis of the Forest by Lauren Kukla based on the memories of Phyllis Chatham.

Read With Me MN is excited to partner with the Loppet by providing 15 free copies of the book for children at the event. 📚❤️

Inspired by Phyllis Chatham’s childhood memories growing up in North Minneapolis, Phyllis of the Forest follows a young girl who finds a magical forest where she can imagine, explore, and feel free.

Thank you Nekima Levy Armstrong, for an incredible storytime of J Is for Justice this past weekend at Acorn Bookshop❤️

I swear this bookstore is magical, and Nekima brought even more magic into the space. We read, we chanted, some of us cried, and the power of books was truly felt.

Thank you to everyone who came out, purchased a book, and helped make the morning so special. A huge thank you to Nekima for taking time from her busy schedule of working and advocating for the rights of our community to share this beautiful book with us. As well as thank you to Acorn Bookshop for their beautiful space.

This is what we mean when we talk about the power of books: bringing people together, helping us learn our history, and creating space for community to celebrate and push literacy forward.

We are so lucky to have organizations like Green Card Voices in our community. Their organization is centered on storytelling content ranging from books to digital videos, each unique and authentic to every immigrant and their experience. To date, they have published 8 regional books and recorded the stories of 500 immigrants coming from 140 countries.

Their books ‘Green Card Youth Voices’ and ‘Our Stories Carried Us Here’ is a favorite to include in middle school teacher book sets. A huge thank you to Green Card Voices for the book donation for us to get as many of these books out into our community!

Last weekend we had the pleasure of having Lanell Lightfoot join the Omega D.E.A.R. storytime with her incredible book ‘Sing’ published by Planting People Growing Justice. This event is a partnership between us, Epsilon Rho Chapter and Café Marguerite, and made by possible by a grant from Minnesota Humanities Center and Picture Book Parade. Not only did we get to hear Lanell read her incredible book and be moved by the impact music has on learning, we got to hear Lanell’s powerful singing voice that led many of us to tears. Witnessing the power of story, community, and music in real time!

If you haven’t made it out to Omega D.E.A.R., please come next month! We are at Café Marguerite with a different author every third Saturday from 9-10am and we give away free copies of books! See you at the next one!

A HUGE thank you to Planting People Growing Justice for their generous donation of children’s books! Planting People Growing Justice is a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to plant seeds of social change through education, training, and community outreach.

Through innovative, arts-centered literacy and writing programs, PPGJ supports children, families, and community members with access to books and learning spaces that affirm identity, elevate lived experience, and amplify voices.
