So Others May Learn

Our scholarship recipients are motivated, bright and diligent 8th grade students who attend either the Ziga School or Ngamo Primary School in Zimbabwe.

So Others May Learn is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides academic scholarships to motivated, needy primary, secondary, and tertiary students in Sub-Saharan Africa. Although the vast majority of the students pass their entrance exams for secondary school, the nearest high school is over 10 km away; with no cars or even bicycles available to them, many students attempt the 20 km round trip walk, but are the walk is too long, especially on n empty stomach, and most give up after short while. Although a boarding school in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe offers another alternative, the cost of the tuition, room and board is prohibitively expensive for the families. That's where So Others May Learn steps in to help! Our scholarships cover four years of tuition, room and board, and uniforms and books for the selected students. Over 98% of the eighth graders at the Ngamo Primary School are eligible to attend secondary school, however, before the scholarship program was implemented, less than 2% moved on to high school. We've changed that!

She came back to give back. ❤️

Shearize Phiri, a current SOML university scholar, recently returned to her former school to volunteer during her semester break.

Rather than spend her break recharging, for over 3 weeks she tutored and mentored students at Mosi Oa Tunya High School in Zimbabwe – a school currently home to multiple SOML scholars. Shearize especially enjoyed teaching Combined Science to Form 2 and Form 4 students!

“It has been a rewarding experience to share the knowledge and skills I have gained through my studies,” she wrote.

Shearize's decision to return to her former school is a beautiful example of what it can look like when education begins to extend beyond the individual. Here at So Others May Learn, we believe in our scholars paying it forward. For education to be sustainable in the communities we work, the investment must come from within. 🌱

From a village to university life in the capital city! 🎓

Mubita Liwakala is one of our newest scholars and a first-semester student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance at the University of Zambia. 📘

Growing up, Mubita never thought he would one day get to experience life in the capital city, Lusaka. So, when it was time to begin his university studies, arriving in Lusaka came with plenty of nerves and uncertainty.

Three months in, Mubita has settled well into university life, made friends, and is finding his footing in Lusaka!

To our donors and partners, Mubita says, “Your help will bring a lot of change in my family and development in my country.”

The work continues beyond the classroom.

Not long ago, Muzaifa met with Ronald, Isabella, and Mercy Promise to discuss their experiences in the classroom. Their conversation focused on practical strategies for academic improvement and setting goals for sustained growth.

These conversations are an important part of the support our scholars receive. Providing a scholarship is only one part of investing in a student’s education. There are moments when a student needs encouragement, moments when they need direction, and moments when they simply need someone to sit down with them, understand where they are, and help them figure out the next step.

This deeply captures the heart of what we do – helping our scholars move toward the infinite possibilities that lie ahead.

She’s on her way to becoming Dr. Chisaka. 🥼

Selina Chisaka is a Year 3 medical student at Texila American University in Zambia.

Selina is currently completing her medical placement and hospital rotations, gaining hands-on experience that is sure to prove valuable in her future medical career.

After medical school, she wishes to specialize in hematology-oncology or forensic medicine. With more exposure in the field, she may encounter other branches of medicine that spark her interest. 🔬

Building her future, one page at a time. 📚

At So Others May Learn, investing in communities is part of our model.

We know that learning doesn’t occur in a vacuum and believe that investment in education requires an understanding and commitment to all of the components of a student’s life that contribute to their success.

In the areas we work, access to clean water is one of the most fundamental needs, and Sinde Village (Zambia) is no exception.

Through matched funding, So Others May Learn has supported the drilling and solarization of a borehole at Katiba in Sinde Village, providing the community with a reliable, solar-powered source of water. With solarization, the pump runs without fuel costs or the unreliability of grid electricity, making this a genuinely sustainable solution for the community long term.

Access to clean water reduces disease burden, lessens the time women and children spend collecting water, and creates the conditions for better health and school attendance across the village.

Thank you to our donors and partners who continue to make it possible for So Others May Learn to invest not only in students, but in the communities around them.

Back in April, Hadijah was presented with a scholarship from So Others May Learn. Months later, she would write about what the scholarship means to her.

Fittingly, Hadijah describes the opportunity much like her father did — “life changing.”

And perhaps, that alone says it all.

Hanifah is discovering talents beyond the classroom!

Our own Ninsiima Hanifah recently received a certificate in recognition of her outstanding entry in the Oner Creativity and Writing Competition. (Oner is a soft drink-brand in Uganda.) The competition showcases young creative talents in schools across Uganda. 👏

Her exploits do not end there, though. Hanifah is also an active member of her school’s Music, Dance and Drama Club and has been invited to join the team performing at Uganda Martyrs University’s graduation program in October.

The possibilities are just beginning to unfold for Hanifah!

She dreams beyond the courtroom.

Isabella Akatuhurira has been a So Others May Learn scholar since 2012. A primary school-student at the time, Isabella is now in her fourth year of a law program at Islamic University in Uganda. ⚖️

Outside the classroom, she enjoys playing squash, traveling, and meditating. 🚗

Isabella is passionate about using her education as a tool for social change, with a particular desire to mentor underprivileged students and help them achieve their own goals.

So Others May Learn opened a door for her back in 2012. Now, her dream of becoming a lawyer may open doors for others, too! 🚪
