Minneapolis for Community Control of the Police Statement on MPD’s progress on the state consent decree.

Last month, Effective Law Enforcement for All (ELEFA) released a damning report detailing MPD’s failure to meet goals as outlined by the state’s consent decree.

The report highlights a pattern of delayed action on internal affairs cases, conflicts of interest in investigations, and inaction from the disgraced former Chief of Police, Brian O’Hara, who suddenly resigned in late May.

The court-enforceable consent decree was enacted between the City of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights following the murder of George Floyd 2020.

MDHR identified patterns of racial discrimination and disproportionate use of force on people of color by the Minneapolis Police Department.

ELEFA, a non-profit organization made up of current and former police and police allies, was hired by the City of Minneapolis to provide so-called ‘independent’ oversight over MPD’s compliance with the consent decree.

ELEFA was approved to receive up to $1.5 million dollars per year from Minneapolis taxpayers for overseeing this settlement.

If an organization of cops and cop-supporters will publish a report this critical of the Minneapolis Police Department, we have to wonder how bad things really are.

This report comes as no surprise. We cannot trust police to police themselves, just as much as we cannot trust them to keep our communities safe.

The City of Minneapolis needs real police accountability. Not another toothless review board, not another series of symbolic but ultimately inconsequential reforms.

We need real political power over the police, through an all-elected civilian police accountability commission.

Update on our ballot initiative for community control of the police!

Thanks to the tireless work of our organizers and petitioners, we have collected 10,434 signatures so far since re-launching our campaign in May 2024! But the fight is not over!

Because of the undemocratic charter process, we expect that many of these signatures will be invalidated. That’s why we are trying to exceed the threshold of required signatures by 150-200%

We need your help!! Find us in the streets or join us at the next petitioner meeting on Tuesday July 21st to get involved in the fight for community control!

Want to simply learn more about our initiative so you can bring it back to your neighborhood?

Join MPLS 4 Community Control of the Police on the third Tuesday of any month to learn how to petition, get supplies, and build community! We will let you know about upcoming events happening in our city, and empower you to get out the word about community control wherever you are!

If you have signed petition sheets that need to be notarized, you can drop in to get them stamped and turned in! If you have already signed our petition, but your address has changed, you can also stop by to update your signature!

Want to see police accountability in Minneapolis? After all of MPD’s ICE collaboration, racist policing, continual murder of our community members, their failures to protect victims of domestic violence, their lies and so much more its clear that MPD cannot be reformed! We need community control of the police and you can help us get it!

Join us on Sunday, April 26th at Minnehaha Falls (near Sea Salt) at 2pm for a mass meeting and petitioner training!

Petitioning season is upon us and we need your help! We will teach you about our initiative to take power from Mayor Frey and replace his full authority over MPD with an all-elected Civilian Police Accountability Commission and you’ll even get some practice petitioning! Bring a friend! We hope to see you there.
