A Little Refresh at SHAC!

The SHAC will be closed to in-person activities August 26–September 7 while we install brand new flooring!

And this is just the beginning! Over the next few months, you’ll see even more exciting updates around the arts center, including new tables and chairs to help make our creative spaces even more welcoming and functional.

None of this would be possible without the incredible support of the Michigan Arts and Culture Council and the National Endowment for the Arts Facilities Improvement Grant that we received earlier this year. We are incredibly grateful for their investment in the VFAA/SHAC and our community!

The SHAC and VFAA invite you to apply to Local Landscapes, a juried art exhibition! Online entries due Sept. 6th. Applicants working in the genre of landscape art are encouraged to submit work capturing their favorite places around Michigan. Artwork should depict natural scenery, although it may include man-made structures, animals, people or abstract concepts.

Artist Highlight: K.K. Sparks - Born Beneath A Northern Sky Photography is currently on display at the Milford Public Library MI through the end of July. Please stop in and check out the beautiful artwork in their community room during the library's open hours.

With a background in education, K.K. Sparks is a self-taught photographer who focuses on the rustic landscapes and urban environments of Michigan.

As a former history teacher, she seeks to interpret her home state through the lenses of both the past and present, focusing particularly on cycles of decay and renewal in society and nature. Reflecting this theme, she often repurposes salvaged frames, which results in unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Also central to her artistic vision is the desire to capture the mood the moment the photo was taken. To that end, she employs various digital and traditional artistic techniques to enhance her photography.
