🦋 PHIL Award Spotlight: Emily Keeven, BS, RRT-NPS 🦋

In 2020, Emily Keeven of Children’s Mercy Kansas City was recognized with a PHIL Award for the extraordinary care, advocacy, and support she provides to children with tracheostomies and their families.

Her nominator shared how Emily not only makes sure her patients’ respiratory needs are met, but also provides encouragement during long hospital stays. She goes beyond the bedside, advocating for tracheostomy patients and traveling to schools to help train nurses caring for newly trached students.

Emily’s dedication is felt not only in what she does, but in how she does it—with compassion, kindness, and a genuine commitment to the children and families she serves. 💗

Why do we dedicate an entire week to respiratory care?

Because the work of respiratory therapists reaches far beyond the hospital walls. It touches patients, families, caregivers, and communities—and often during some of the most important and difficult moments of their lives.

Respiratory Care Week gives us an opportunity to raise awareness, celebrate the profession, and recognize the impact of respiratory care.

At FACES, it's also a time to celebrate the stories behind the PHIL Award and the respiratory therapists whose care has made a lasting difference.

🦋In 2011, the PHIL Award continued to grow beyond Michigan. 🦋

That year, FACES presented PHIL Awards for the first time in Colorado and North Carolina, honoring Cloy VanEmon at Children’s Hospital Colorado and Candie Blanton at Carolinas HealthCare System Union.

With each new hospital and each new recipient, the PHIL Award was reaching more respiratory therapists and communities across the country.

Twenty years later, we’re looking back at the milestones that helped shape the PHIL Award’s journey—and celebrating how far that journey has taken us. 💜

🦋In 2009, the PHIL Award took an important step beyond Michigan. 🦋

For the first time, FACES honored respiratory therapists outside of Phil’s home state, recognizing Bradley DeMars at University Hospitals–Case Medical Center and Mary Lou Drahnak at University Hospitals–Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

What started as a way to honor extraordinary respiratory therapists in Michigan was beginning to reach communities beyond our home state. And this was just the beginning. 💜

🦋 PHIL Award Spotlight: Anthony Bouffard, BS, RRT 🦋

For families facing a sick child, having a respiratory therapist who takes the time to explain, educate, and reassure can make all the difference.

In 2022, Anthony Bouffard, BS, RRT of Baystate Medical Center was recognized with a PHIL Award for the exceptional care he provides to pediatric patients and their families.

His nominator shared that Anthony takes the time to thoroughly explain what is happening, carefully considers each patient’s individual needs, and uses current research to provide the best possible care. His ability to educate and reassure families leaves a lasting impression—and even gives his fellow healthcare professionals greater confidence when working alongside him.

That combination of knowledge, compassion, and dedication is what makes respiratory therapists such an important part of patient care. 💗

Ever wondered what all those letters after a respiratory therapist’s name mean? 👀
RT. RRT. RRT-NPS. RRT-ACCS.

They’re not all the same—and those credentials can tell you something about a respiratory therapist’s training, professional level, and area of specialty.

At a high level:
🫁 RT — a general term for a respiratory therapist. Depending on the state and their credentials, an RT may be a CRT or RRT.
🫁 RRT — Registered Respiratory Therapist, the core professional credential held by many practicing RTs.
👶 RRT-NPS — a specialty credential focused on neonatal and pediatric respiratory care.
🏥 RRT-ACCS — a specialty credential focused on adult critical care.

Credentialing requirements can vary by state, but one thing doesn't change: respiratory therapists are highly trained professionals who play a critical role in helping patients breathe.

What does a respiratory therapist actually do? A whole lot.

Respiratory therapists care for patients across every stage of life and in so many different settings—from critical and emergency care to neonatal care, pulmonary rehabilitation, sleep medicine, long-term care, and care at home.

They help patients breathe, recover, manage chronic conditions, and navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.

One profession. Every breath. Every moment.

For 20 years, The PHIL Award has been giving patients and families a voice in recognizing the respiratory therapists who make a difference when every breath matters.

Respiratory therapists are an essential part of the healthcare team—but their work can sometimes go unseen.

The PHIL Award changes that.

Created in 2006 in memory of Philip C. Lamka, the award honors outstanding respiratory therapists nominated by patients, families, and caregivers. Each nomination tells a story of compassion, dedication, advocacy, and exceptional care.

Recognition matters because it reminds respiratory therapists that their work is seen. Their expertise matters. Their compassion matters. And the difference they make in a patient's life matters.

For 20 years, we've been celebrating the people who help us breathe easier.

20 years. More than 1,000 honorees. Countless stories of extraordinary care.
