Construction Craft Laborers Training & Apprenticeship Fund of NJ & DE Construction safety and skills training for Apprentices and Journeymen who are members of the Laborers' International Union Locals 3, 55, 77, 78, 199

The Construction Craft Laborers Training and Apprenticeship Fund of New Jersey and Delaware is affiliated with Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), and serves more than 10,000 members in Delaware and New Jersey. Construction safety and skills training is offered for all forms of commercial building, heavy, highway, and residential construction. Additionally, the fund offers trai

ning for environmental remediation and energy retrofitting/weatherization. Each year, LIUNA members and contractors utilize our training network to update their skills in a variety of fields. In addition to our training centers in Monroe Township, NJ and Newark, DE we also provide on-site toolbox talks for a contractors' workforce.

✊🏿 Today is Juneteenth.

Today marks the 160th anniversary of the moment in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas. More broadly, the day commemorates the end of slavery as an institution in the United States.

The commemoration of this momentous day in history became known as Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a celebration of Black freedom and a reminder of the importance Black Americans have played in our country's history.

🥵Heat Safety Alert! With temperatures set to break 93°F today, and little time to acclimatize to the heat, it's more important than ever to Work SAFE today:

• Wear sunscreen: sunburn can inhibit the body's natural cooling mechanism;

• Stay : drink 8 oz of water every 15 min while working. And keep drinking water after work to keep hydrating;

• Avoid caffeine, soda & alcohol: they can speed dehydration and contribute to heat cramps;

• Use personal cooling items: when possible, utilize cold packs/compresses and cooling headbands;

• Find shade: If you're on lunch or on break, find shade whenever possible; and

• Use the buddy system: keep an eye on your brothers & sisters. If they begin to exhibit signs of heat illness (extreme headaches; excessive sweating; nausea or vomiting), be sure to take immediate action to cool them and alert a supervisor.

🎥 This Mental Health Awareness Month, listen to someone who's lived it, like LIUNA Mason Tenders' Training Fund Instructor Jamal Fowler, who knows:

"My Union was pivotal, was instrumental in my recovery. I had the resources. I had the people.

"When you're able to speak honestly and candidly about your addiction, when you when you're able to speak with confidence and tell people about your shortcomings, people recognize that. And people understand that. And that resonates with people.

"We're pushing out the narrative that it's okay not to be okay. It's okay to have the conversation.

"A lot of times you subscribe to the school of thought like, it's not cool to speak about that. And you can kind of like correlate that with the construction workers. You know, that macho, 'I'm tough. I'm strong. I have the fortitude.'

"But nah. You need that support system to show them and say, ‘Hey, listen brother, sister. I went down that road. I understand what it is to suffer. You don't got to suffer alone. You go head, we could speak. Let's try to figure this out together.’

"And we're trying to change the narrative where it's not weak to speak. Right? It's important that we do that."
