What if happiness isn't what we've been chasing all along?

For years, many of us have been told that more money, more success, and more achievements will make us happy. But what if the real answer is something much deeper?

In this episode of The Missing Piece Podcast, I sit down with Cátia Arnaut, a researcher and expert in the science of happiness, to explore one of life's biggest questions:

👉 What truly makes people happy?

From her research across different countries and cultures, Dr. Ana shares why happiness is not simply a feeling, why money doesn't guarantee fulfillment, and why meaningful relationships may be the most important factor in our well-being.

As someone who has experienced loss, adversity, and rebuilding life after amputation, this conversation resonated deeply with me. We discussed purpose, gratitude, resilience, human connection, and how we can find happiness even during life's most difficult moments.

🎙️ In this episode:
✅ Why money doesn't equal happiness
✅ The difference between happiness and well-being
✅ The 4 skills that can improve your happiness
✅ The power of gratitude and purpose
✅ Why meaningful relationships matter more than ever
✅ How to find joy during difficult seasons of life
✅ The missing piece of modern happiness

One statement from this conversation stayed with me:

"Technology has connected us digitally, but disconnected us personally."

We celebrate real milestones with Lydia Foundation’s combined therapy and peer coaching. Our team uses gait training, balance retraining, and task-specific practice alongside peer-led support to help people walk more confidently and regain daily independence.

Typical progress shows notable improvement within 6–12 weeks, with many clients reporting safer balance, reduced reliance on assistance, and smoother daily routines. We walk alongside each person, setting realistic goals and adjusting plans as they progress.

We’re proud to share a behind-the-scenes look at how amputees at Lydia Foundation co-design our latest prosthetic prototype. Participants test each iteration, then give hands-on feedback that we use to improve mobility and comfort in everyday life.

Our hands-on review process helps us move faster from idea to real-world benefit — like smoother gait and reduced socket irritation for many testers.

We’re proud to share how our tailored employment program turns training into lasting work. At Lydia Foundation, we teach practical skills like digital literacy, interview coaching, and adaptive workplace techniques through focused training modules. We pair trainees with supportive employers from our partnership network and offer on-the-job coaching to ensure a smooth transition.

One recent trainee completed all modules, secured a placement with a partner employer, and now earns steady income while building confidence and independence. These outcomes show how targeted support creates real career paths for amputees.

We test prosthetic innovations with amputees to turn their feedback into real, usable function. One device we recently helped evaluate adds a tactile sensor to the socket to reduce slipping and improve gait stability. Participants report feeling more secure and confident during daily steps.

In early trials, users show a 28% drop in socket adjustments per day and a 15% improvement in timed walking tests. One participant said, “I don’t worry about my leg slipping anymore — I can walk farther without stopping.” These results guide design tweaks and give us measurable goals for wider trials.

We invite donors, collaborators, and the amputee community to learn more and support ongoing testing at https://wix.to/sQI4NNJ 🙌
