Guitars Over Guns

Guitars Over Guns We offer students in Miami, Chicago, LA & NYC a power combo of music education and mentorship 🎸🚀 We have served more than 5,000 students over the past decade.

Our Philosophy
Guitars Over Guns’ unique curriculum emphasizes social-emotional learning and outcomes through music and arts instruction. After each session, mentors assess students’ academic performance, school and program attendance, artistic progress and peer interactions. We use social-emotional learning measurements to evaluate key competencies such as empathy, teamwork, initiative, responsib

ility and problem solving. Recent evaluations indicate that over 90 percent of Guitars Over Guns students improved their academic performance, overall conduct and decision-making skills. These measurements are byproducts of a greater shift that is occurring in the way these young people think about the world and their place in it. Our Story
Established in Miami in 2008, the organization now operates in Miami and Chicago. Guitars Over Guns began as an informal music mentoring project led by Dr. Chad Bernstein, serving youth from under-resourced neighborhoods in Miami. Upon observing the students’ achievements both on stage and in the classroom, Chad formalized the program and partnered with local schools to impact even more youth. In collaboration with Communities in Schools of Miami, the first official Guitars Over Guns program began at North Miami Middle School in 2008. Over the past twelve years, the program has grown to offer no-cost music instruction, mentorship and academic support at 36 school and community sites in Miami and Chicago. Additionally, Guitars Over Guns now offers a more extensive curriculum that includes dance, visual arts and annual summer camps. With the support of our mentors, staff, community partners, board of directors and passionate advocates around the world, Guitars Over Guns is ready to inspire and empower students everywhere to .

Chicago didn't just chose, they AMPLIFIED their sound over Spring Break. 🎶🎸

During our Smells Like Teen Spirit Spring Break EP experience, Guitars Over Guns students came together to rehearse, record, collaborate, and put their own spin on Nirvana’s iconic anthem.

What started as a few days of creative exploration became something bigger: young people building confidence, finding connection, and creating music together in real time.

COMING SOON: The GOGO Chicago student cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.
Let's celebrate the voices, talent, and sounds behind this project! 💚

This month, we’re proud to spotlight Los Angeles mentor Lucas Lenny. 🥁💛

Originally from Paris, Lucas brings a rich blend of jazz, West African music, and global influences into his work as both an artist and educator.

Over the past three years with Guitars Over Guns, he has helped students build confidence and connection through music while continuing to grow as a leader himself.

“Mentorship is an essential human experience,” Lucas shared. “Seeing music through the eyes of someone discovering it for the first time helped me reconnect with the enthusiasm that made me fall in love with it in the beginning.”

Inspired by the mentors who once poured into him, Lucas continues to create space for young people to explore their creativity, find their voice, and feel supported along the way.

Thank you, Lucas, for all you bring to the GOGO community!

Last week, Guitars Over Guns mentees from across South Dade took the stage at South Dade Senior High Buccaneers to celebrate their growth, creativity, and everything they’ve built through mentorship and music this year, at our South Spring Showcase, lovingly known as GRAD JAM.

With live performances and heartfelt moments shared between students, mentors, families, and community members, the night reflected the true power of young people being supported, encouraged, and given space to find their voice.

Thank you to everyone who came through to celebrate this milestone with us. We’re so proud of our mentees and excited for what’s ahead! 🙌

In Miami-Dade, high school students enrolled in arts education programs showed 13% higher GPAs and 20% better attendance, according to Arts Access Miami latest impact report. K-8 schools with arts programming were also significantly more likely to achieve higher reading and math levels.

The arts help young people build confidence, resilience, and connection. Add mentorship and a caring adult into the mix, and the possibilities grow even bigger than just music lessons after school.

Check out this BTS from our upcoming Miami Music Video and witness that impact in real time.

Official release drops next month! 🎬🎶

What’s possible? Everything. 💫

This spring, Guitars Over Guns hosted our first Pathways to Possibility: College and Career Day, a full-day experience designed to expand how students see their future.

Through hands-on workshops and real conversations with college reps and professionals, students gained tools, insight, and access to new pathways, from higher education to creative careers.

Huge thanks to our partners at Miami Dade College, University of Miami, including the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami along with our mentors and community leaders for pouring into the next generation.

The future is wide open, and our students are ready. 🩷
