South Florida's Voice of Conservation. Tropical Audubon Society has been leading South Florida bird walks, championing wildlife, protecting Biscayne Bay and the Everglades since our 1947 founding, with our roots dating back even earlier. As the official local chapter of National Audubon, we are among Miami’s most esteemed non-profit environmental organizations. Known as “South Florida’s Voice of C

onservation,” we’ve been on the frontlines of environmental protection for decades — standing strong against contamination of our drinking water, defending the Urban Development Boundary, and advocating for the protection of Endangered Species and the preservation of our region’s Globally Critically Imperiled Pine Rockland habitat. Your Data Can Help Save Birds 🐦💚

A single bird collision report might seem small—but together, thousands of observations can tell us a much bigger story.

By documenting bird-building collisions through the Miami-Dade Bird Collision Monitoring Project and dBird, we can:

🔎 Identify collision hotspots
📊 Quantify bird mortality
🏢 Work with property owners to reduce dangerous lighting
🐦 Develop solutions that make buildings safer for birds
📣 Advocate for a more bird-friendly Miami

Miami-Dade County's endangered lands need your voice. 🌿

Together with our conservation partners, Tropical Audubon Society is urging Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the Miami-Dade County Commission to allocate $20 million to the Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program in the FY 2026–27 budget.

EEL protects and restores some of our county’s most precious remaining natural areas — including Pine Rocklands, hammocks, freshwater and coastal wetlands — providing critical habitat for birds and other wildlife while helping protect water quality, reduce flooding and extreme heat, and strengthen our climate resilience.

Urge Miami-Dade leaders to dedicate $20 million to EEL and help protect the wild places that sustain both wildlife and our community.

🌓 You can make a difference for migrating birds with the flip of a switch. 💡➡️🌙

From now through November 15, millions of birds will migrate through South Florida on their way South for the winter — many traveling at night by the light of the stars. Bright city lights can disorient them, pulling them off course and increasing the risk of deadly building collisions.

The good news? One simple action can help them arrive safely: turn off unnecessary lights at night.

Through Tropical Audubon’s Lights Out Miami initiative, we’re asking our community to:

💡 Turn off unnecessary lights from 11 p.m. to sunrise
🪟 Close blinds and shades
⏲️ Use timers and motion sensors
🌙 Keep outdoor lighting shielded and pointed downward
📱 Report bird-building collisions through our Miami-Dade Bird Collision Monitoring project on iNaturalist

Every darkened window helps make South Florida’s night skies safer for birds journeying between their breeding and wintering grounds.

Our organization has been selected as the Q3 beneficiary of Ever Haze for Florida, a charitable beer initiative led by Tripping Animals Brewing Co., powered by Ever Haze — its flagship Florida-brewed IPA — in partnership with Green Light Distribution.
