On July 16, 2023, Jamie Christian got the call that no mother ever wants to hear: her 23-year-old son D’Andre had been shot.

“I panicked — I couldn’t breathe. My husband quickly stepped in, turning off the stove, helping me put on my shoes, and assisting me out the door as we rushed to the car. By the time we got to the scene, we received another call telling us to go directly to the hospital instead.”

D’Andre was shot six times, leaving him partially paralyzed from the waist down. When she later found out the circumstances around the shooting, Jamie was left with an overwhelming sense of anger and heartbreak.

“Investigators later told us that young men approached my son’s car while he was stopped at a red light and just began shooting at him without any provocation. He did nothing to them — nothing to deserve this.”

Jamie has turned her pain into purpose by starting a nonprofit, A New Beginning for You Foundation, where she works to build stronger community relationships through programs focused on youth development, counseling, health and wellness, and prevention and intervention. She is also an Everytown Survivor Network fellow and grantee.
