The Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of South Alabama is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor position serving as Research Coordinator for the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (Weeks Bay NERR).

The position is based at Weeks Bay NERR in Fairhope, Alabama, and is a collaborative partnership between the University of South Alabama and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, State Lands Division.

The Research Coordinator will oversee research and monitoring activities at the Reserve, develop and conduct research projects, and facilitate collaborations with academic, governmental, nonprofit, and private-sector researchers. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in estuarine ecology and research relevant to water quality, watershed and land management, coastal resilience, water resources, or responses to storms and other environmental change.

A Ph.D. in estuarine ecology, resource management, environmental sciences, coastal/marine sciences, or a related field is required.

Dear Colleagues,

The Goodheart Lab in the Division of Invertebrate Zoology at the American Museum of Natural History is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow (two-year term) to perform comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses on nudibranchs related to an NSF-funded project in collaboration with Dr. Rebecca Tarvin at UC Berkeley to study the process of kleptocnidy, the theft and storage of microscopic stinging structures (nematocysts), in nudibranch mollusks. We are interested in whether this unique process evolved through specialization of phagocytosis, an ancient cellular process used across animals for immune defense and intracellular digestion (project link: https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/show-award?AWD_ID=2611236.)

The Postdoctoral Fellow will design and execute original research projects related to the grant under the supervision of Dr. Jessica Goodheart. The position will involve field work, the care of invertebrates, and genomics. Scholarly impact, including through publication in refereed literature and presentation at conferences, workshops, and seminars, is a major goal of this position. This position is intended to be a period of mentored advanced training, scientific research, and/or pedagogical contributions designed to enhance the incumbent’s professional, research, and scholarly proficiency.

Forwarded message from the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF):

On 29 May, the US Office of Management and Budget released proposed revisions to the Uniform Guidance, which lay out requirements for all federal grants. If adopted, these changes would fundamentally reshape how federally funded science is conducted in the US. They would shift grant decisions away from merit-based peer review to political priorities, allow awards to be terminated without cause, and severely restrict or prohibit international collaboration, DEI activities, conference travel, and publication costs. Summaries and analyses of the proposed regulation have been prepared by several organizations; see the commentary by AGU President Brandon Jones.



For the past year and a half, CERF has been working to defend science, and that push is more important than ever.



The priority is to submit public comments describing the potential impact of proposed changes on your specific research activities and the scientific enterprise as a whole. As an organization, CERF will be submitting public comments, but there is strength in numbers—the community will have a greater impact by submitting many individual public comments describing personalized and detailed impacts.



The 13 July deadline to submit public comments is rapidly approaching. Your voice, and your story, can make a difference.



We have joined the American Physical Society’s efforts to fight back, and we encourage CERF members to use the APS web form to submit public comments and join their social media campaign. Please also spread this information to raise awareness with colleagues.
