February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. The quality of the connections we have in our youth can impact our relationship patterns well into adulthood. Unfortunately, unhealthy and dangerous behaviors are common.

⭕ More than 4 out of 5 female r**e survivors report first experiencing s*xual violence before age of 25. (CDC)

⭕ Age group 12-24 reports a higher prevalence of s*xual assault compared to other age groups. (youth.gov)

A penguin in a bowler hat wants to send you a message.

If you mustache what it is, we won't leave you pen-guessing. He's blubbering over with excitement to tell you It's On Us will be meeting again soon. Come to Skurla 106 at 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 22nd to fish for the latest news and new actions.

Our flippered friend would attend, too, if it weren't so hot in Florida. After all, to prevent s*xual assault.

TIPS:

Travel Together

Stick together and check-in. Nights out are always more fun—and safer—with friends. Look out for each other and if you’re going out, tell a friend or

roommate. Don’t forget to check in with them, let them know you’re safe, and share your ride.

Verify Your Ride

Remember to Check Your Ride, everytime. Before you hop in your next ride, take a second to double-check the app for your driver’s information. Follow these 3 steps to make sure you get into the right car:

1. Match the license plate number

2. Match the car make and model

3. Check the driver’s photo

You can also turn on the Verify Your Ride safety feature in your app settings to receive a unique PIN for every ride that you’ll share with your driver to help make sure you’re getting in the right vehicle.

Help At A Moment’s Notice

If you ever feel uncomfortable on a trip but aren’t in an emergency situation, you can tap the safety shield icon, select Contact safety agent, and get help from a trained ADT agent—either on the phone or silently via text. If the situation escalates, ADT can call 911 for you.

Trust Yourself

Be careful at night and trust your gut. Be aware of your surroundings, have your phone available, and try to request rides in well-lit areas. If you see something out of the ordinary, trust your instincts and don’t hesitate to call campus authorities for help.

Victim Connect defines stalking as "a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear....It is often made up of individual acts that could, by themselves, seem harmless or noncriminal, but when taken in the context of a stalking situation, could constitute criminal acts."

Many people may minimize your fear, because many acts of stalking seem harmless, even romantic, but stalking can escalate to violence. You know yourself better than anybody else- if something feels wrong, it probably is.

Advocates can be found at police stations, district attorney's offices, and local domestic violence/s*xual assault agencies like the Women's Center of Brevard.

Brevard County Hotlines:
• Women's Center 24/7 R**e Helpline: 321-784-4357
• Women's Center 24/7 Domestic Violence: 321-607-6809
• Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Victim Services Unit: 321-633-8414

General Resources:
• Victim Connect provides support, information, and referrals to people around the U.S. Call or text 855-484-2846, or visit their website victimconnect.org.

• SPARC shares information specifically about stalking on campus and resources to support victims like a documentation log and tech safety apps.

• NNEDV has a comprehensive guide to increase safety and privacy while using technology.

We believe that It's On Us at Florida Tech:

To recognize that non-consensual s*x is s*xual assault.
To identify situations in which s*xual assault may occur.
To intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given.
To create an environment in which s*xual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported.
