A recent middle school ministry night for included a mock Passover Seder meal, giving their young people a chance to learn about the connection between Passover and the Mass.

"An exciting thing about ministry right now," reflected Reed Golomb, Director of Youth Ministry and Full Member in Youth Apostles, "is that we also have a teen who was formerly served by our ministries volunteering with our middle school ministry!"

Happy feast day of St. Francis of Assisi!

Day 9 | Respect for Priests

Francis held the priesthood dear to his heart. It flowed principally from the fact that it is from the anointed hands of the priest that we receive the Eucharist. It enabled him to look beyond their weaknesses and faults and remain focused on the office of priesthood entrusted to their care.

In his final Testament, Francis wrote: "And then the Lord gave me and still gives me so great a confidence in priests, who live by the rite of the Holy Roman Church, that if they even persecuted me, I would for the sake of the consecration say nothing about it. And if I had the wisdom of Solomon and traveled in the parishes of poor priests, Yet I would not preach without their permission. And them and all other priests I will fear, love and honor as my superiors, and I will not look on their faults, for I see God's Son in them, and they are my superiors. And I do this because, here on earth, I see nothing of the Son of the Highest God, except his most holy body and blood, which he priests receive and which only they give to others" (J. Jorgensen, pp. 40-41).

Day 8 | Faithful through Great Suffering

As the community of friars minor grew and expanded, it became hard for the brothers to live the rather extreme form of poverty that Francis lived and greatly desired for his followers.

There were two areas that caused a great deal of friction--the need for permanent housing and for a formal education for some of the brothers who were to become priests or to assist with the formation of the new members. Francis did not want the community to own lodging, but rather to be like Jesus and the Apostles who had nowhere to lay their head while on mission.

Additionally, Francis was very wary of an extensive or formal education because he was concerned about the pride that so easily crops up among the well educated. These compromises to his approach to poverty greatly disturbed Francis' soul.

In addition, Francis suffered physically from various ailments, in part because of his very austere way of life. Later in life, upon receiving the five wounds of the stigmata, Francis lived with constant pain and, in fact, was unable to walk because of the nature of the wounds in his feet.

St. Francis powerfully and beautifully embraced his suffering with patient endurance as a means of being more intimately united to his beloved Savior and to be an example to the brothers.

Day 7 | Love of Mary

Francis had a very special place in his heart for the Portiuncula, the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels. He spent a good deal of time there during his conversion and found great consolation in both the Eucharistic presence of Jesus and his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Francis remained devoted to our Blessed Mother throughout his life.

In his last days, Francis crafted a beautiful hymn to Mary which he prayed in the chapel of Our Lady of the Angels:

"Hail Holy Lady, Most Holy Queen, Mary Mother of God, who art a Virgin for ever, chosen from heaven by the most holy Father, whom He consecrated with the most holy beloved Son and th Paraclete Spirit, in whom was and is all plenitude of grace and all good. Hail His palace, Hail His tabernacle, Hail His house. Hail His vesture. Hail His handmaid. Hal His mother and all your holy virtues, which by grace and illumination of the Holy Ghost may you pour into the hearts of the faithful, and may you make out of the faithless ones men faithful to God" (J. Jorgensen, p. 154).

Day 6 | Obedience to the Church

Obedience bumps up against our pride, often with an ugly crash. Obedience is one of the hardest virtues to practice. As you would expect, obedience was dear to St. Francis. From the very early days of his new community, Francis greatly desired the blessing and approval of the pope before he would move forward with the development of the Franciscans. Additionally, he refused to preach in any parish without the prior approval of the pastor. He strongly taught the friars to be obedient to their superiors. He begged all of the friars to remain obedient to both the spirit and very words of the Franciscan rule of life. Francis taught that there were three remedies to overcoming all of our trials and temptations: prayer, obedience and evangelical joy.

When asked at one point by the friars to teach them to be perfectly obedient, Francis used an extreme analogy. He answered: "Take a co**se and bring it where thou wilt? It makes no resistance, does not change its attitude, does not wish to move. If thou placest it on a throne, it looks down and not up; if thou dressest it in purple, it appears only paler than before. It is so with the really obedient; he never asks whither he is sent, he never is concerned as to how he came here, does not seek to be taken away. If he acquires honors, they only increase his humility, and the more he is praised, the more unworthy does he consider himself (St. Francis of Assisi, J. Jorgensen, p. 236).

A defining moment in Francis' conversion was the call from Christ to go out into the world in imitation of the Apostles to bring the love and truth of Christ through a life marked by joy, simplicity and poverty.

He heard this call in a moment of great inspiration on February 24, 1209, on the feast of St. Mathias. It was the famous passage from St. Matthew (Mt 10: 7-13) in which Jesus sent out the Apostles to preach the Good News, heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers and cast out devils. He sent them without even minimal provisions because the laborer is worthy.

Francis was convinced that the Lord had laid out the plan for his whole life.

This zeal for evangelization never waned. Francis believed that the example of the brother's lives was a more powerful witness than any words. Indeed, the life of poverty to which he was deeply devoted kept the friars always available for the work of the vineyard--available to go where God, the Church and the community needed them. Francis did not wait long to start sending the brothers to many places throughout Europe and Africa. The world was in great need of Jesus. He burned with a zeal for meeting that need.

Francis' love for God became so strong and all consuming that it generously spilled over into all of his other relationships.

It was certainly directed at his brothers, the Friars Minor. He would spend himself to the point of exhaustion and sickness to care for them--forming them in the Franciscan way, accompanying them on their mission trips and being a model and a mentor.

His care was also directed consistently at those in the world who did not know Jesus. His missionary zeal was truly extraordinary.

His vision for the community was to engage Christ in deep prayer, for significant periods of time, usually away from the world at a hermitage, and then to go out into the world and proclaim repentance and the mercy of God with great joy.

Thirdly, Francis extended amazing care to the poor and to lepers. He saw God in them and He saw good in them. He saw the good even when they did not see it in themselves. He treated them as if they were Christ Himself, laying on the street before him.

St. Francis was deeply moved to follow the example of the Apostles whom Jesus sent out into the world to preach the Good News and build His Kingdom.

On the feast of St. Mathias, Francis heard at Mass the words from Matthew's Gospel: "Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts: no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer deserves his keep."

This was a defining moment in his life. Francis understood these words to be a personal revelation from God. In that moment, the Lord gave him the direction for his life and his future community.

"The Highest One himself revealed to me that I should live in accord with the holy gospel...This is what I want, this is what I with all my soul want to follow in my life" (Jorgensen, p. 57).

In time, Francis saw this way of deep material poverty to be the best means to give absolute primacy to God in his life, to live with a constant awareness of his radical dependence upon God and to be completely available to God for whatever He would ask next from him for the sake of the Kingdom of God.
