Leading by example….
Monday Membership Moment: Leading by Example
When we talk about growing membership, we often focus on flyers, sign-up nights, and social media posts. Those matter, but a powerful tool in any unit is the example its leaders set.
Families decide whether to join Scouting based on what they see. They notice whether meetings start on time, whether leaders are prepared, and whether Scouts are engaged. They notice whether the adults follow the Scout Oath and Law or just talk about it. Scouts notice too. Young people learn far more from what we do than from what we say.
Leading by example in membership looks like this:
◆ Show up prepared. A well-run meeting or event tells a new family that their child’s time will be respected. Survey data confirm families who don’t enroll often cite disorganized events, unclear programs, or unprepared leaders.
â—† Follow up promptly. If a family visits, reach out within a day or two. It shows that you value them and that your unit follows through.
â—† Invite people yourself. If we want Scouts to invite their friends, we should be inviting our own neighbors, coworkers, and fellow parents. A personal invitation from a leader who clearly enjoys the program carries weight.
◆ Let the Scouts lead. Showing youth how to plan, serve, and welcome others, then stepping back, demonstrates the leadership we hope they’ll carry into adulthood.
This week’s challenge: Pick one thing you can do to set the example for your unit. Maybe it’s inviting a family to your next event, calling a visitor you haven’t heard from yet, or arriving early to welcome everyone. Then do it, and notice how your Scouts and fellow leaders respond.
Your unit’s membership grows when its people are worth following. Thank you for leading the way.
