She's our Karin... and she knows scholarships!

If you're a graduating senior—or know one—in Berkeley, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, or Morgan County, you'll want to get to know our very own Karin Hammann Dunn!

Karin is ready to help students get prepared for scholarship season, which officially opens January 1, 2027.

Look for Karin at school college fairs or guidance offices, or reach out to our office and we'll be happy to connect you!

A LASTING LEGACY OF COMPASSION
New Emergency Housing Fund Established

At their August meeting, the Community Foundation Board accepted a generous gift of nearly $44,000 from Faith Community Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. (FCCH), establishing the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation Emergency Housing Fund.

Following the difficult decision to close its doors in May 2026, FCCH’s leadership thoughtfully chose to direct this gift toward continuing the organization’s original mission of providing emergency housing assistance. Established as a field of interest fund, it will support programs addressing emergency housing needs across Berkeley, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, and Morgan counties.

Since 2013, FCCH has served its community with compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment. Although the organization has closed its doors, its impact will continue through this meaningful investment in the well-being of our neighbors.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to FCCH’s board of directors, volunteers, donors, and community partners for this thoughtful gift and for the legacy of care they leave behind.

FlingGolf is gaining momentum across West Virginia state parks and golf courses, thanks to two-time national FlingGolf champion and FlingForAll founder, Jonathan Bellingham. Bellingham is now on a mission to incorporate the sport into West Virginia schools.

Two years ago, with the support of a grant through the Hardy County Founding Fund, Bellingham introduced the sport to Moorefield High School. Now led by physical education teachers Jordan Ours and Tyler Mongold, with Bellingham’s continued support, the program is growing with more students taking interest.

In spring of 2026, a second Founding Fund grant helped students take their skills beyond the classroom to Valley View Golf Course in Moorefield, where students experienced FlingGolf on an actual course. Funding also helped support the production of a mini documentary by award-winning West Virginia filmmaker Justin Harris, which highlights how easy it is to learn the sport and how much students enjoy playing it.

🎥 Upcoming screenings of the documentary are scheduled for Moorefield High School on October 21 at 1:30pm; the WV SHAPE Conference in Bridgeport on October 23 at 11am; Capon Bridge Middle School on November 3 TBD; The River House in Capon Bridge on November 7 at 1pm; and the Cacapon Institute Film Festival in Berkeley Springs on November 21 at 1pm.

We’ve been out and about this week, connecting with our community and celebrating the people and organizations making a difference! 💜

From enjoying Handshakes at the Harvest and spreading awareness for Domestic Violence Awareness Month with Go Purple, to supporting Women of Distinction and EWVCF scholarship sponsor Mary Duke, we’ve been grateful for the opportunity to celebrate community, generosity, and philanthropy.

We also wrapped up the week soaking up new ideas, connections, and inspiration at the Philanthropy West Virginia Conference in Charleston!

At EWVCF, we’re proud to be part of a community that shows up, lifts others, and makes a lasting impact. 💚

What if nonprofit sustainability wasn’t only about finding the next grant, but also about creating opportunities from within the communities we serve?

Keynote speaker Dani Battle shared how social enterprise can turn community needs and assets into possibilities. More than 25 local nonprofit leaders gathered for this session and also studied due diligence and compliance with local financial experts and the WV Secretary of State’s Office. And did we mention the RICH juice that Dani shared with us and the pepperoni rolls from Community Cup & More? Part 2 of this series is October 16. Call us to be part of it!

Ida Geneva Bullett Scholarship Gift Accepted

During our recent Board of Directors meeting, we were honored to accept a meaningful new gift that will create lasting opportunity for our community.

The Ida Geneva Bullett Scholarship honors a loving mother whose life was defined by compassion and service to others by providing a scholarship to a Martinsburg High School senior planning a healthcare career, with a preference given to African American students, followed by minority students and then first-generation students. Now through October 5th, EWVCF is accepting applications for grants from the Frank C. Fischer Veterans Fund. Organizations with programs serving Berkeley, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, and/or Morgan Counties are eligible to apply. The maximum grant award is $2000.
