Widows are often struggling to get by with regular maintenance on their home and the landscape around their home. This leads to challenges in their day to day, and can result in mental health decline and puts their safety at risk.

Meet Terry, Chairman of the Board of FRI!

Terry Smathers is retired from over 30 years of government service from the Executive cadre at the Internal Revenue Service in Information Technology and management. In his retirement he and his Proverbs 31 wife, Peggy, are feeding their passion for hurting children and vulnerable families by serving on the Family Renewal Initiative board and spending 3 months each year in Bolivia building Christ-based relationships in a local orphanage.

Terry is a long-time elder at Independent Bible Church, where he draws great encouragement, both from the teaching and his church family. He has borrowed his life motto from Appalachian Bible College which exists “because life is for service”.

Family preservation is the heart of our mission and we work very hard to keep families together. Our process largely consists of developing a plan and support system that allows for the children to remain safely in the home.

We do offer voluntary hosting services for situations that require separation. This allows for the parents or guardians to receive medical and/or mental health care that they otherwise would not be able to receive.

Hello and Happy August! ☀️

We will be spending time this month highlighting the wonderful members of our board that help keep our mission alive!

We will kick it off with a special highlight of our newest board member, Pastor Mark Johnson!

Johnson is Pastor of Discipleship at Independent Bible Church in Martinsburg WV. Previously, he served 37 years as lead Pastor-Teacher at IBC. His educational background includes a B.A. in Bible and Theology, a Th. M. in Old Testament, and a D. Min. in pastoral leadership. Mark is married to Gerri and they are parents of two and grandparents of eight. Mark is grateful for all the ways that Family Renewal Initiative touches the hurting in the community in the name of Jesus.
