Meet SFC's newest hire, Logan Scherf, Land Steward! 1. How long have you been with SFC and in what capacity? I have been with SFC for almost three months as a full time Land Steward. 2. What did you do before coming to SFC? Before SFC I worked for The USDA APHIS division as a Black-footed ferret technician, CDFW as a seasonal aide in the Napa/Sonoma region, and as a biologist for a pest control company in Montana. 3. Describe a highlight or memorable moment of your work here. A highlight of my job at SFC is working outdoors in incredible landscapes and learning more about our organization's work. 4. What do you enjoy doing outside of your work time? Outside of work I enjoy fishing, hiking, snowboarding, and hanging out with my dog. 5. What is your favorite part about working with SFC? My favorite part about working with SFC is collaborating with a crew of people, each bringing their own expertise to what we are trying to accomplish.

Got some turtle action out at Stookey Preserve on our game cams installed by our Mariposa youth interns and Mariposa Summer Camp participants! The Preserve protects and restores critical habitat for the Western Pond Turtle - especially important for this species, where the foothill elevation is a stronghold.

Join SFC in celebrating 1,063 acres of newly protected land through our latest project, the Ekarnas Hemman- “Homestead of the Oaks” Conservation Easement in Madera County! This property is the newest addition to SFC’s portfolio of conserved lands, bringing our total protected acreage to 69,214 acres. Located southeast of Coarsegold in SFC’s Highway 41 Focus Area, the property is directly adjacent to SFC’s Millar Conservation Easement. Protecting this property expands a vital corridor of 5,150 acres of conserved lands, supporting watershed health, wildlife movement, working rangelands, and scenic open space on Road 200 for visitors and residents connecting to Hwy 41. Meet SFC's new Project Manager, Sam Zabell! 1. How long have you been with SFC and in what capacity? I have been with SFC for a little over 1 month. I am here as a Project Manager, and will work across a variety of projects including our CalFire Forest Health grant, Stockton Creek Preserve enhancements, and providing GIS support for all projects! 2. What did you do in your life before SFC? I have been a GIS guy for the past 6 years. I originally came the Motherlode to be a GIS Technician, and later GIS Analyst for Tuolumne County. I supported Public Works, Planning, and did a lot with our Office of Emergency Services in fire response, evacuation planning, and disaster recover. I then went to Tuolumne River Trust/ Yosemite Rivers Alliance as a GIS Specialist, where I managed GIS deployments for their Forest Health program. I helped managed fuels reductions on 4500 acres of fuels reduction treatments in the Stanislaus National Forest, reforestation projects, botanical surveys, and more. 3. Describe a highlight or memorable experience during your time with SFC. My time has been brief so far, but have enjoyed that in my 5ish weeks I have already worked on a number of different projects and different staff. 4. What do you like to do outside of your time with us? Outside of work, I will be found outside! I am a mountain biker, trail builder, and skier. I also love going to hear live music, and playing violin in my community orchestra 5. What is your favorite part about working with SFC? My favorite part thus far has been the variety, and being thrown into things headlong!

Happy Anniversary, Stipa pulchra!
August 23 marked the 22nd anniversary of the signing of legislation designating Stipa pulchra, or purple needlegrass, as CA’s official state grass. Let's celebrate by taking a closer look. A long-lived perennial bunchgrass, Stipa pulchra is one of California’s most widespread native grasses. It grows from the Oregon border to N. Baja CA in habitats ranging from grasslands and coastal sage scrub to chaparral, oak woodland, and coastal prairie. Some Stipa pulchra plants may survive 150+ years. Their roots can extend 1 to 5 meters underground, helping them persist through California’s long dry summers. The long awns twist when dry and straighten with moisture. As they repeatedly twist and untwist, they help “drill” the sharply pointed seeds into the soil.
