The Mariposa Gem and Mineral Club will be hosting an open house on Saturday, May 20, from 10 am to 4pm at their workshop, The Quarry, located in the basement of the Mariposa Inn Hotel.
If you’ve ever wondered what rockhounds did with their finds, here’s your opportunity to check it out! The Club will have demonstrations on lapidary (turning a rock into a polished piece of stone), wire-wrapping (turning that beautiful stone into a piece of jewelry), drilling holes in stones, wax work in preparation for casting, alternative forms of metal casting (casting brass and copper into art pieces using broom straw, sand, and other materials), and enameling (applying enamel to copper). There will also be exhibits of faceting; dichroic glass; metal clay, beading, and centrifugal metal casting. Members will be on hand to answer questions about the different equipment the Club has in the workshop. After training, club members have access to use the equipment for a minimal fee. All interested parties are invited to join the Club.
The Quarry is accessed via the back door of the Mariposa Hotel Inn from the parking lot on 5th St behind the Hotel and The Alley in Mariposa.
