The mission of HLFCC is to reduce, prevent and end domestic and sexual violence by offering emergency services, comprehensive interventions and educational programs in our schools and communities. The Highland Lakes Family Crisis Center is a 24-hour/day, 7 days/week shelter offering a crisis hotline, intervention and advocacy for adult survivors of stranger and non-stranger sexual assault and domestic violence serving Blanco, Burnet, Lampasas and Llano Counties. HLFCC’s services are free and confidential to clients on a walk-in or scheduled basis and include:
* 24-hour/day, 7 days/week crisis intervention hotline, walk-in assistance & emergency shelter, food, clothing and transportation.
* Medical Advocacy— Medical accompaniment; doctors office and hospital
* Legal Advocacy -- Law enforcement offices, prosecutors’ office and court accompaniment along with protective order and other legal assistance
* Other Client Advocacy — Job application assistance, locating and furnishing permanent housing, In-shelter counseling-individual and group along with referral services to other helpful agencies
* Outreach counseling for child and adult victims and their loved ones in area communities and schools.

November is Movember, a time to raise awareness about men's mental health and the importance of breaking the silence.

We recognize that men can be survivors of domestic violence, too. Everyone deserves to feel safe, heard, and supported.

Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Our HLFCC team spent last week at the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) Conference!

Community Impact & Development Director Janessa Hardaway, Executive Director Kathrine Cholcher, Legal Advocate Rose Jones and Client Services Director Debi King attended the conference, connecting with others who share our commitment to supporting survivors and strengthening our communities.

Healthy relationships aren't about who has the power. They're about how we treat one another.

There's nothing wrong with traditional roles when both partners freely choose them. The concern begins when those roles turn into pressure, control, or expectations that take away someone's independence.

So where do we draw the line between tradition and control?

Abuse doesn't have a relationship status. You don't have to be married, live together, or even still be in a relationship for abuse to happen.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) refers to abuse by a current or former romantic partner. It's often called domestic violence, and it isn't always physical. Emotional abuse, threats, intimidation, and controlling behaviors are all forms of abuse.

We want everyone to recognize the signs and know that support is available. No matter the relationship, abuse is never okay.

𝑶𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓. 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭. The purple shirts will be put away, the proclamations are done, and the awareness events are wrapping up.

But the need doesn't end with October. There are still families who need a safe place to stay, people looking for support, and survivors working toward a new beginning.

We're here every day, not just during awareness month. And we couldn't do this work without a community that cares. Because making a difference takes more than one month.

“𝑊ℎ𝑦 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛'𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑣𝑒?” It's a question survivors hear far too often.

But leaving an abusive relationship isn't always simple. Fear, financial dependence, threats, children, and the risk of escalating violence can make leaving incredibly difficult.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐞. 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐫. Instead of questioning someone's decision to stay, let's start questioning the behavior that made them unsafe in the first place.

Let's change the conversation.

Have you seen Sleeping with the Enemy, starring Julia Roberts?

This film is a powerful reminder that domestic violence isn't always about physical abuse. Control, intimidation, isolation, and fear are also forms of abuse. While Hollywood adds plenty of drama, the patterns of power and control portrayed in this movie are very real.
