At 20 years old, Amanda’s dad asked her to take a paternity test. Weeks later, the results arrived in a greeting card.

The test confirmed what he had long suspected: he was not her genetic father.

But the truth did not end their relationship. His honesty helped explain the distance Amanda had sometimes felt—and ultimately brought them closer.

When DNA reveals new family, people assume the hardest part is finding them.

But the harder part is what happens after.

For Lisa, some relatives welcomed her.
But others wanted nothing to do with her.

That kind of rejection is hard to explain unless you’ve lived it.

For Lisa’s full story, listen to S1 E25 of Unraveling Me: https://shows.acast.com/unraveling-me/episodes/s1e25-unraveling-lisa

Family stories should not have missing people.

Not adoptees left without answers.
Not DCP disconnected from genetic relatives.
Not people with an NPE or DNA surprise expected to quietly disappear into someone else’s secret.
Not genetic parents, siblings, or extended family erased because the truth is uncomfortable.

Being left out of your own origin story is not protection.

It is loss.
It is disconnection.
It is being asked to live without pieces of yourself that other people were allowed to know.

At Right to Know, we believe family truth matters — even when family is complicated.

No one should be left behind.
No one should be forgotten.
And no one should be denied the truth of their genetic identity.

Maria’s DNA test led her to a first cousin match, a family willing to ask questions, and one uncle who had been in Seattle at exactly the right time.

He agreed to take a DNA test.

The result: he was her father.

But the story got even stranger.

He'd been an actor in movies and TV shows Maria had watched as a child. And when she finally saw him, she saw herself too: the same eyes, the same smile, the same chin, even the same tooth out of place.

Sometimes DNA doesn’t just give you a name.
Sometimes it gives you a mirror.

For more of Maria’s story, listen to S1 E28 of Unraveling Me:
