SuperMax Meets St. Maxie 🐾❤️
What is St. Maxie’s Shield?
Eleven months ago today, I received a phone call that changed my life.
My beloved German Shepherd, Max, was being boarded at a facility that was supposed to be caring for him while I was away. On an 84-degree day, Max was exercised three separate times. He collapsed and developed bloat—a life-threatening emergency.
There was no CPR. No emergency veterinary care. No phone call to me.
In fact, I was not even notified until the following day.
I had to arrange Max’s necropsy myself, and because of the lengthy delay before I was informed, I was never able to properly say goodbye to my very best friend.
In the months that followed, I learned that despite claims of being licensed and insured, the boarding facility was operating without a business license, without the permits required for a pet care business, and without insurance. The cameras clients relied upon to monitor their pets had reportedly been removed more than 18 months earlier without notice.
To this day, there has been no apology. No reimbursement for Max’s necropsy. No accountability.
If I still sound heartbroken and angry, it’s because I am.
But we chose to do something with that pain.
We turned it into St. Maxie’s Shield, a program dedicated to helping senior, vulnerable, and at-risk German Shepherds escape high-kill shelters and find the loving homes they deserve.
Because of Max, we have helped shepherds like Zena, Zy, Cody, SuperMax, Butler, Klaus, and many others begin new chapters filled with safety, dignity, and love.
Every month, we help another shepherd in need in honor of a dog who deserved so much better.
Today, SuperMax sat beneath Max’s photo, keeping watch where my sweet boy once did. It felt like a reminder that love doesn’t end when we lose them. Sometimes it becomes something bigger.

And if you have ever considered fostering or adopting a German Shepherd, that is one of the most powerful ways you can help.
Thank you for helping us turn grief into hope.
