Muddy Pug Farm & Animal Sanctuary Bringing our community together, providing sanctuary, healing and hope for all. We are a registered 501(c)3 organization based in Washington.

Our mission is to provide respite, recovery and re-connection to animals and people alike in our farm community. We take in and care for our permanent resident farm animals, with a focus on providing them with the care, love and healing they need...for the rest of their lives. As we evolve, we look forward to developing spaces for the community to gather and connect for recovery, counseling, and creating community.

We are so excited to kick off our very first appearance at Maple Valley Days!

The Muddy Pug has been blessed by the support of this incredible community for so many years. From volunteers who have rolled up their sleeves to help care for our residents, to local businesses and neighbors who have championed our mission, this sanctuary simply would not exist without you.

This weekend, we’re excited to show up, make new connections, share stories of rescue and sanctuary, and spread a little compassion along the way.

If you’re at Maple Valley Days, please stop by and say hello! We’d love to meet you, introduce you to some of our residents, and share more about the work happening here at the farm. ❤️🐮🐐🐰🦆

Today is National Animal Sanctuary Caregiver Day.

Most people see the happy photos.

They see the rescued cow learning to trust, the senior dog sleeping safely, the rabbit stretching out in the sunshine, or the sheep grazing peacefully in a green pasture.

What they don’t always see are the early mornings, the late nights, the endless cleaning, the fundraising, the vet appointments, the difficult decisions, the worry, the grief, and the constant responsibility that comes with caring for animals who have nowhere else to go.

Sanctuaries do not run on good intentions alone. They run because people choose to show up consistently —every single day—to feed, clean, repair, transport, advocate, and love.

Today I want to thank every sanctuary founder, caregiver, volunteer, engaged board member, donor, and supporter who helps make this work possible.

The residents may never know the sacrifices made on their behalf, but their lives are better because of them.

And that matters.

❤️ From all of us at The Muddy Pug Farm & Sanctuary, thank you for standing with sanctuary caregivers everywhere.

SuperMax Meets St. Maxie 🐾❤️

What is St. Maxie’s Shield?

Eleven months ago today, I received a phone call that changed my life.

My beloved German Shepherd, Max, was being boarded at a facility that was supposed to be caring for him while I was away. On an 84-degree day, Max was exercised three separate times. He collapsed and developed bloat—a life-threatening emergency.

There was no CPR. No emergency veterinary care. No phone call to me.

In fact, I was not even notified until the following day.

I had to arrange Max’s necropsy myself, and because of the lengthy delay before I was informed, I was never able to properly say goodbye to my very best friend.

In the months that followed, I learned that despite claims of being licensed and insured, the boarding facility was operating without a business license, without the permits required for a pet care business, and without insurance. The cameras clients relied upon to monitor their pets had reportedly been removed more than 18 months earlier without notice.

To this day, there has been no apology. No reimbursement for Max’s necropsy. No accountability.

If I still sound heartbroken and angry, it’s because I am.

But we chose to do something with that pain.

We turned it into St. Maxie’s Shield, a program dedicated to helping senior, vulnerable, and at-risk German Shepherds escape high-kill shelters and find the loving homes they deserve.

Because of Max, we have helped shepherds like Zena, Zy, Cody, SuperMax, Butler, Klaus, and many others begin new chapters filled with safety, dignity, and love.

Every month, we help another shepherd in need in honor of a dog who deserved so much better.

Today, SuperMax sat beneath Max’s photo, keeping watch where my sweet boy once did. It felt like a reminder that love doesn’t end when we lose them. Sometimes it becomes something bigger.

If you’d like to support the lifesaving work of St. Maxie’s Shield, please visit muddypugfarm.org or donate via Venmo .

And if you have ever considered fostering or adopting a German Shepherd, that is one of the most powerful ways you can help.

Thank you for helping us turn grief into hope.

While conducting his regular barn security patrol this afternoon, SuperMax identified a highly suspicious group of fencing clamps and immediately sprang into action. Thankfully, thanks to his vigilance, the sanctuary remains safe. 😉

On a more serious note, we want to thank everyone who stepped forward to help us rescue Max and bring him to the Muddy Pug. Your support made it possible for us to say “yes” when he needed help most.

As many of you know, rescue is often only the beginning of an animal’s journey. Since arriving, Max has required ongoing veterinary care, treatment for chronic ear issues, and a specialized diet to help him stay healthy and comfortable. We continue to work closely with his veterinary team to address several health concerns and give him the best quality of life possible.

The funds raised during his rescue helped cover the critical first steps—bringing him to safety, transportation, intake care, and immediate medical needs. Today, we are focused on the long road ahead: the veterinary care, nutrition, and daily support that help Max thrive.

If Max’s story has touched your heart and you’d like to help support his ongoing care, we would be incredibly grateful. Donations can be made at:

🌐 muddypugfarm.org or Venmo to muddypugfarm

Every gift, no matter the size, helps ensure that Super Max can continue protecting the sanctuary from dangerous fencing clamps and other barnyard threats.

Thank you for being part of Max’s journey. ❤️

We got an interesting and important question from a follower - Why (with the massive work that is required to run a sanctuary) do we open our doors to the public? We go into detail why we do, and why some rescues and sanctuaries choose differently. We have seen some posts lately from both sides of this question and we wanted to weigh in with a transparent discussion on why this works for us and our residents.

Sometimes I find myself wondering what our residents’ lives were like before they came to the sanctuary.

Because most of the animals who arrive here aren’t babies. They come to us after years of living, surviving, and carrying experiences we’ll never fully know.

Princess, our beautiful polar bear, came from a backyard breeding situation. When she was rescued and brought to us through the Vancouver Humane Society, she had a large scar on the top of her head where a cyst had to be removed. We were told she had been struck there repeatedly over the years.

Blue’s story is different, but not by much. She appeared on a local rescue page under unusual circumstances…an unspayed French Bulldog being given away. Had someone with the wrong intentions found her first, she likely would have been destined for the same life Princess endured.

But when I watch them together, I don’t see their pasts.

I see a playful little Frenchie who never really got the chance to be a puppy.

And I see a gentle, patient mama dog who never got to keep any of her babies.

I see healing.

One of the greatest privileges of sanctuary work is witnessing animals discover safety, comfort, friendship, and joy—sometimes for the very first time. Watching them learn that life can be soft, predictable, and full of love never gets old.

There is so much healing in this work, and every day we’re reminded why it matters.

If you’d like to help us continue providing lifelong care for animals like Blue and Princess, we would be incredibly grateful for your support.

Thank you for helping us give second chances to animals who deserved so much better than the lives they were handed. ❤️🐾

One of the many sweet moments on the Sanctuary is seeing all of our residents lounging. The cows sprawl out and sunbathe. The feathered friends roost and nest. The buns buns sploot. But it all indicates the same thing - we feel safe. We feel loved. We feel cared for. We can rest and relax. This is why we Sanctuary and YOUR regular support makes this possible. To sponsor the next nap, the next roost, the next sploot…please head to muddypugfarm.org or Venmo to muddypugfarm. With so much love from The Muddy Pug.

It was an afternoon of apple branches in the Rabbitats. We are so blessed to have multiple apple trees on the Sanctuary and no one loves apple branches more than the bun buns.
