Lorentz Post 11, American Legion, Mankato, MN Since 1919, the Legionnaires of Lorentz Post 11 has served our community, state and nation in numerous different charitable activities.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, member

ship stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines. Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth.

The Minnesota House of Representatives, Veterans and Military Division just passed their version of the Veterans Omnibus Bill, HF 2444, and it was BAD. The bill would reduce the Veterans Homelessness funding by $10 Million Dollars, effectively closing the program and turning Veterans who rely on the funding back onto the streets. This is not redundant funding, the state has done it right using these funds very specifically to target only gaps in resources not already covered by Federal or nonprofit resources.

The bill also underfunded MN Veterans Homes by 12%, or $27.5 million. The state just built three new Veterans Homes to service more Veterans in Minnesota and now they are refusing to properly fund them, so that Veterans can use these homes. In his testimony about these cuts MDVA Commissioner Brad Lindsay said, "Make no mistake, Veterans will die waiting for beds that are empty because we lack the funding for staff if this passes."

These are unacceptable, and HF 2444 must be strongly opposed.

The Mankato community is invited to provide input on two design features of the updated Veteran's Memorial Bridge, part of a MnDOT project set to begin construction in 2026. We seek community input on the railing design and the shape of the metal emblems honoring veterans, which will be featured at set intervals along the bridge.
