An important part of healing for domestic abuse & sexual assault survivors is grieving. Grief is complicated and doesn't have a timeline - but survivors are also grieving multiple losses that most people never see.

May 5 – National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives (MMIWR)

May 5 is recognized as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives. This day calls attention to the ongoing crisis of violence facing Indigenous women, girls, and relatives, and honors those who are missing or have been taken from their families and communities.

Indigenous people continue to experience disproportionate rates of violence, and far too many cases remain unresolved. Today is a time to remember, to stand in solidarity with families and survivors, and to reaffirm our responsibility to advocate for safety, justice, and accountability.

Addressing this crisis also requires accurate, timely data and meaningful action. The findings and recommendations of the Not Invisible Act Commission underscore the urgent need for improved data collection, better coordination across jurisdictions, and the full implementation of policies designed to prevent violence and support families. Implementing these recommendations is essential to ensuring visibility, accountability, and real change.

We honor the lives of our missing and murdered relatives. We raise awareness so they are not forgotten. And we commit to continued efforts to protect Indigenous women and relatives and to seek justice for all those impacted.
