NEWSFLASH:
JUNETEENTH PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
To: Hopkins Co. Community
Lately the African American Coalition of Hopkins County has been receiving calls from individuals inquiring about this year’s Juneteenth Festival. With all due respect, unfortunately due to certain commitment (or lack thereof) circumstances, we had to make a “conscious organizational business decision” to not sponsor a Juneteenth Festival this year. As much as we had wanted to, the local community support needed was just not there, so we decided to not have it. We have tried to sponsor the Juneteenth Festival for the last 3 years, however, the total community support that we had hoped for, just wasn’t there. Our organization fully understands the need and importance of celebrating “our” holiday. Making the call to not have it hurts from a cultural, heritage and history angle. But sadly sometimes that’s the only game that they leave you to play. We truly apologize for not being able to sponsor a festival this year. Perhaps someone else may decide to step up and take the “wheel of leadership”, and put on a Juneteenth community event in our city. Juneteenth is a holiday that we (as native Black Americans) should cherish and celebrate for years to come!
WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY JUNETEENTH!

“I don’t want you telling me to go back to Africa, unless you going back where you come from.
..After you send all the Koreans back to Korea, the Chinese back to China, the Jewish people back to Jerusalem, the Koreans back to Korea, and you give the Indians their land back and you get on the Mayflower from which you come…

We all here on borrowed land. We have to figure out how we’re going to make things right for all the people of this country.”
- Fannie Lou Hamer (1917-1977) Activist and humanitarian.
