A new exhibition in Chicago, “Paris in Black: Internationalism and the Black Renaissance,” celebrates the painters, writers, and performers who sought freedom in the city of light and left an indelible mark on its history.

“When I first learned of the exhibition…my initial reaction was, ‘What a dream come true!,’” says writer Daria Simone Harper. “As much as I’d like to reflect on my favorite Black artists and writers expatriating to Paris and living their best lives, though, their efforts to escape racism in America were not without troubling experiences, too. I wondered how the show would deal with this tension.”

🇲🇽 In the small town of Ayapa, Tabasco, an Indigenous Mexican language called Ayapaneco nearly disappeared forever.

By 2011, reports claimed only two elderly men were still fluent in the language — Manuel Segovia and Isidro Velázquez. But there was one heartbreaking problem: the two men reportedly refused to speak to each other because of a personal disagreement. 🗣️💔

As younger generations stopped learning Ayapaneco and Spanish became dominant in the region, the language was pushed closer and closer to extinction.

The story went viral around the world after a 2011 article by The Guardian described how an entire language could vanish because the last two speakers no longer communicated with one another.

Efforts have since been made in Mexico to preserve the language through dictionaries, recordings, and local teaching programs before this ancient piece of Indigenous history disappears forever. 🇲🇽📚

An Oscar-winning musician has lost her honorary degree amid fallout after an investigation found she allegedly faked her Indigenous ancestry.

Buffy Sainte-Marie, 85, was awarded an honorary Doctors of Law degree from the University of Toronto in 2019.

At the time, university officials said she was being recognized for her work in music and the arts, as well as for her advocacy for 'the rights and dignity of all people.'

But on Wednesday, a governing council at the university voted to rescind Sainte-Marie's honorary degree following a petition, CBC reports.

The decision marks just the latest honor the singer, who won an Academy Award for co-writing 'Up Where We Belong,' has lost since a 2023 investigation revealed she may have built her entire career on deception.

As Sainte-Marie rose to fame with her anti-war anthem 'Universal Soldier' and 'Now That the Buffalo's Gone' in the 1970s, she told heartfelt stories about having Mi'kmaq heritage through her adoptive mother.

Yet the CBC revealed that the singer's birth certificate showed she was actually born Beverly Jean Santamaria to white parents in Massachusetts - not the Cree woman from Saskatchewan's Piapot First Nation she has claimed to be since the 1960s.

🎥🇲🇽 Diego Luna once again moved audiences at Cannes with *Ceniza en la Boca*, a powerful and emotional story about migration, loss, and the strength of family bonds.

The film follows two Mexican siblings traveling across Spain in search of their undocumented mother, highlighting the pain, hope, and sacrifice experienced by many immigrant families every day. ❤️

For many viewers across Latin America, this felt like more than just another red carpet moment — it felt deeply personal.

As the theater rose for a lengthy standing ovation, many saw it as another sign that Mexican voices and immigrant stories are no longer being ignored, but embraced and heard around the world. 🌎✨

Diego Luna’s presence at Cannes once again reflected the growing global impact of Mexican cinema and storytelling.

🇲🇽 From Mexico to Cannes… our stories matter.
