Happening at MYArts on Make Music Madison Day! ππͺπ¬π±π²π³πΈ ππ»πΎπΆπΆπ²π·π°!
π
A group of Wisconsin Taiko players and their teacher, who is visiting from California, will be presenting a demonstration of Hachijo Daiko, a seldom-seen form of Taiko drum playing which focuses on improvisation.
π₯
They will be performing outside at MYArts (1055 E. Mifflin St) on June 21, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
π₯
After a short performance/demonstration, and explanation of the art form, they will welcome the public to join in the drumming!
πΊ
Volunteers can step up to the drum and play any rhythm they like, and the student will play along with you a bass beat.
π
Hachijo taiko drumming developed centuries ago on the relatively isolated island of Hachijo, Japan. In the form, two players play on an elevated taiko drum in a relaxed style. One player plays a steady bass beat, and the other focuses on improvising rhythms around some standard forms. Itβs often played at social events, and can be thought of as a form of βdrumming Karaokeβ where players can show off their unique styles.
