What does NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration have to do with farming? Turns out, a whole lot.

This week, NASA Earth and Acres came to West Texas to listen to farmers and better understand what producers need from the technology being developed above us.

NSP Board Member Barry Evans hosted the group on his farm near Kress, giving NASA scientists and agricultural researchers a firsthand look at a no-irrigation operation and the realities of farming with limited water in the Texas High Plains. Barry shared how practices like no-till and rotating sorghum play a role in building a more resilient operation as water supplies continue to decline.

NSP Crop Improvement Director Ethan Triplett also participated in the tour, helping bring the sorghum industry’s perspective into conversations about how satellite data and Earth observation technology can better serve producers.

The Space4Ag Tour is part of NASA Acres’ effort to bridge the gap between space-based research and decisions being made on the farm. The tour brings NASA’s Earth Science Division together with producers to better understand challenges surrounding crops, water management and agricultural decision-making.

For sorghum growers, these conversations are especially important. Sorghum’s ability to perform in water-limited environments makes it an important part of the conversation around water conservation and agricultural resilience.

We took sorghum’s story on the road in South Dakota this week.

NSP Chair Amy France, Legislative Director Elissa Gilliam and Measurement & Verification Director Brandt Underwood visited multiple farms in South Dakota, meeting with Jerry and Buck Van Zee, David and Dylan Knoll, and Adam Schindler.

These producers represent some of South Dakota’s leading sorghum operations. Schindler also serves on NSP’s Legislative Committee and as the U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council’s sorghum sector director. The team continued its market-development conversations with Bunge and NuGen Energy.

The trip concluded in Sioux Falls, where France represented U.S. sorghum on the “Collaborating Across Agriculture for Global Growth” panel at the Midwest Agricultural Export Summit.

From the farm gate to end-user meetings and the summit stage, this was membership at work: listening to producers, strengthening relationships and creating more opportunities for sorghum at home and abroad.

Farmers need a Farm Bill, not more delays.

Across the country, producers continue to face low commodity prices, rising input costs and increasing uncertainty. Congress had another opportunity to provide the certainty agriculture needs, but the Senate Farm Bill did not advance.

Year-round E15 means stronger markets for sorghum farmers. National Sorghum Producers is urging the Senate Agriculture Committee to preserve permanent nationwide E15 language in the Agricultural Act of 2026 and move the Farm Bill forward, providing long-term certainty for farmers, ethanol producers and rural communities.

📢 This morning, U.S. Wheat Associates and the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) joined organizations representing wheat, rice and sorghum growers as well as the U.S. milling and maritime industry, the World Food Programme and U.S. Department of Agriculture officials in celebrating the latest donation of U.S. commodities through the Food for Peace program at a portside event in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The U.S.-flagged Liberty Grace 🇺🇸 was loaded with 28,420 MT of Louisiana rice and will now travel to Houston to be loaded with 19,980 MT of HRW 🌾 before departing for the Port of Mombasa in Kenya. Through distribution under the World Food Program, the shipment is estimated to feed more than one million people facing starvation for an entire year.
