Your Wi-Fi speed test looks great. So why is your Zoom call still freezing?
It's a frustrating experience most of us have had — and the answer has less to do with bandwidth than you might think. CableLabs' Shafi Khan, Principal Engineer, joined the What the Dev? podcast to explain why the real culprit is a lack of bi-directional communication between applications and networks.

Shafi walks through CableLabs' Quality by Design framework — built on intent-based APIs — and how it enables real-time telemetry and end-to-end metrics to actually solve the problem. He also covers Kamara, an open-source tool providing APIs for developers and app builders to bridge that gap.

Congratulations to Dr. Alberto Campos on being selected for the Cable TV Pioneers Class of 2026! 🎉

As CableLabs’ first Fellow, Campos has spent 38 years advancing broadband, wireless and optical communications technologies. His contributions include leading PHY specifications for DOCSIS® 3.0 and 3.1 and pioneering Proactive Network Maintenance, now a globally adopted operational practice. Campos holds more than 300 patents worldwide and has been recognized throughout his career for innovation, technical leadership and mentorship across the broadband industry.

Cheers to this well-deserved recognition, Dr. Campos!

Karthik Sundaresan zooms out from the speed milestones to explain what the DOCSIS® core network actually enables — the data hooks that let wireless services, adaptive experiences and self-optimizing capabilities build on top of the network.

This is the part of the roadmap that doesn’t always make the headlines.

One moment from the full interview that deserves its own spotlight. 🎙️

Active specification work is already underway to extend DOCSIS® 4.0 spectrum from 1.8 GHz to 3 GHz — with the potential to unlock 15–16 Gbps downstream for operators. The conversation is already moving toward 6 GHz from there.

CableLabs is deeply honored for our CISO and Distinguished Technologist, Brian Scriber, to have been selected by the Federal Communications Commission to serve as a member of the Communications Security, Reliability, and Interoperability Council X (CSRIC X).

CSRIC is the FCC's federal advisory committee focused on strengthening the security and reliability of our nation's communications infrastructure — work that has never been more critical. The council brings together a remarkable group of leaders from across the industry, government, and public safety communities, and we are humbled for Brian to serve alongside them.

In Scriber's role at CableLabs, protecting the communications ecosystem is core to what he does every day. We at CableLabs continue to contribute to this important work and with the support of his team, Brian will help advance the security and resilience of the networks that millions of Americans depend on. https://cablela.bs/4fj19Qn
