Remembering Joel Cohen, founding director of the Boston Camerata, who passed away the other day. His CDs were a huge influence on me, and kicked off my passion for early music. This is reprinted from a notice Early Music America:

Legendary early-music pioneer Joel Cohen (1942-2026), who led the Boston Camerata for four decades starting in the late 1960s and is often credited with transforming the priorities and landscape of the field, died July 26. The news was announced by his wife, Anne Azéma, the Boston Camerata's current artistic director. A lutenist and scholar — he also studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris — Cohen cut more than 50 recordings. His interests and programming typically foreshadowed what became trends in American historical performance practice, exploring music across cultures — from once-obscure Medieval repertoire to music of the New England Shakers and Black Americans in the 1870s. Among his international accolades was EMA's 2021 Howard Mayer Brown Award for lifetime achievement.
